Higher prices forcing US shoppers to get creative to keep eating seafood

June 8, 2023 — U.S. shoppers are spending more on groceries this year as they balance their desire for quality and healthiness with the higher cost of food, including seafood, according to two new surveys.

Besides cost, American consumers are also considering eating well, quality, nutrition, freshness, convenience, family food preferences, individual cooking skills and habits, and individual shopping experiences when deciding whether to purchase a particular food product, according to the Food Industry Association (FMI) Vice President of Research and Insights Steve Markenson. Health attributes, quality, and sustainability are also factors in seafood-purchasing decisions being made by U.S. consumers in 2023, Markenson said.

NFI, FMI partner to standardize seafood buying process

April 29, 2021 — FMI – The Food Industry Association and the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) have teamed up to offer forms designed to standardize the seafood buying process.

The two organizations created fillable forms for retailers and wholesalers to use when sending seafood product specifications to suppliers. The fillable forms allow organizations to indicate their product requirements and enable seafood suppliers to consolidate their communication, FMI and NFI said in a press release.

New Seafood Forms Aim to Improve Buyer Process

April 29, 2021 — The following was released by the National Fisheries Institute:

NFI and FMI – The Food Industry Association launched new resources designed to standardize the seafood buying process and improve efficiency. Retailers and wholesalers can use these fillable forms when sending seafood product specifications to suppliers. The goal is to streamline and standardize the language and specifications for each seafood species to help suppliers comply and fill orders.

Forms currently exist for shrimp, scallop and snow crab, while additional forms are being developed for salmon (farm-raised and wild-caught) and finfish.

Health and wellness playing growing role in seafood purchases, FMI Power of Seafood report finds

February 24, 2021 — Seafood sales at U.S. food retailers ramped up 28.4 percent in 2020 to reach USD 16.6 billion (EUR 13.7 billion), according to a new report.

Sales of the combined category of fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable seafood outpaced sales in the produce, meat, and deli department, according to the newly released edition of the Power of Seafood 2021 report from FMI – The Food Industry Association.

Walmart links sustainability initiative to higher seafood sales

October 27, 2020 — Walmart stores that ran a targeted sustainable seafood campaign have seen a significant lift in fresh seafood sales, an executive with the leading global retailer said.

Starting this spring, Walmart launched a massive store signage campaign for both fresh and frozen seafood “to communicate more clearly to customers the quality, value, and sustainability of the seafood they buy at Walmart,” Jacqui Lyons, divisional merchandise manager for seafood and seasonal meat for Walmart U.S. said in a press release from FMI – The Food Industry Association.

Report: COVID-19 presenting opportunity for retail seafood sales boost

August 14, 2020 — It’s no secret that United States retailers face several challenges, but a new report revealed what could drive Americans to purchase more seafood, particularly during the COVID-10 pandemic.

With any report on seafood comes the commonly known, not-so-great news, and the FMI’s (the Food Industry Association) report, the Power of Seafood, is no different: American seafood consumption lags far behind other major categories.

NFI: Food workers should receive COVID-19 vaccine early on

June 25, 2020 — The National Fisheries Institute and other food industry groups are urging U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to prioritize food, agriculture, and retail workers for receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Scientists have advised that COVID-19 will remain a continuous public health concern, so the importance of a vaccine cannot be overstated. A vaccine targeting COVID-19 is likely the only way to generate immunity across a population,” NFI, FMI – the Food Industry Association, the National Restaurant Association, and other groups said in a letter to Trump.
