Inflation hurt seafood sales in 2023, but home prep gaining traction, FMI’s Power of Seafood finds

March 11, 2024 — FMI – The Food Industry Association’s Power of Seafood 2024 report highlighted declining U.S. retail seafood sales in 2023, but also revealed preparing seafood at home has grown incresaingly popular since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report, released during a conference session at Seafood Expo North America in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., on 10 March, found U.S. seafood sales revenue declined 3.1 percent to USD 18.9 billion (EUR 17.3 billion) in 2023. By category, frozen seafood realized the largest drop in revenue, decreasing 5.8 percent to USD 6.8 billion (EUR 6.2 billion). Fresh seafood sales dropped 3.5 percent, dipping to USD 6.2 billion (EUR 5.7 billion).

42nd Seafood Expo North America opens in Boston

March 11, 2024 — Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America, produced by Diversified Communications, has opened in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., for its 42nd edition on 10 March 2024.

During the three-day expo, exhibitors will demonstrate their latest innovations and build lasting relationships with North American buyers. The expo runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, 10 March and Monday, 11 March, as well as from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, 12 March at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.

Seafood Expo North America – 2024 Expo Preview

March 5, 2024 — After months of anticipation, it is time once again for the Seafood Expo North America / Seafood Processing North America – the largest gathering of seafood professional on the continent – to take over Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

The 2024 iteration of the expo kicks off this Sunday, 10 March, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and will continue through Tuesday, 12 March.

Inflation is changing the way Americans shop for seafood

April 5, 2023 — Inflation is changing how Americans shop for seafood, executives with Category Partners said during a presentation at Seafood Expo North America, 12-14 March in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

According to the Idaho Falls, Idaho, U.S.A.-based strategic insights company, which focuses exclusively on the fresh industries in the retail grocery channel, average retail prices of frozen seafood jumped 6.6 percent for the 13 weeks ending 4 February, resulting in a 8.3 percent drop in sales by volume and a 2.2 percent decline in dollar sales. Conversely, fresh seafood inflation was 1.1 percent for the quarter, resulting in a 2.9 percent slide in sales by volume, though the category realized a 1.9 percent increase in dollar sales, according to the NielsenIQ scan, powered by Category Partners analysis.

SENA 2023: Value-Added Salmon Shines in Boston

March 16, 2023 — New products were on display at Seafood Expo North America (SENA) in Boston this week. And while there was a wide selection – from Netuno’s Tambaqui Ribs to King & Prince’s Honey Butter Biscuit Shrimp – there seemed to be a big focus on value-added salmon products.

The focus on value-added salmon products really shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise. Salmon is one of the top five seafood items consumed in the U.S., with the latest data revealing that consumers ate 2.83 pounds per capita in 2020. It has a high penetration on menus, but with inflation impacting restaurant sales, seafood lovers are once again cooking at home – just like the days of COVID when restrictions limited eating out. But we’re past the days of COVID. Offices and schools have reopened, meaning that time is limited and precious. Although people want to cook at home, they also want convenient options to speed up the process. Well, the seafood industry is ready to deliver.

March 9, 2023 — The full schedule of free, participatory events has been released for the 2023 Seafood Expo North America, taking place 12 to 14 March, 2023 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

This year’s events schedule includes new product showcases, the annual Seafood Excellence Awards, chef demonstrations, brand and wellbeing coaching sessions, and the expo’s annual oyster-shucking competition.

Seafood Expo North America keynote to address 2023 economic outlook

February 28, 2023 — Megan Greene, a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University, and Kroll Institute global chief economist, is returning to deliver the keynote launching the comprehensive conference program at Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America, and taking place from 12 to 14 March, 2023, at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

2023 Boston Seafood Show Exhibit Hall Space Currently 25% Bigger Than Last Year

February 3, 2023 — Seafood Expo North America, also known as the Boston Seafood Show, may be nearing a return to pre-pandemic times.

Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, and the subsequent cancellation of the event in 2020 and 2021, the Boston Seafood Show had attracted more than 22,000 seafood industry professionals from around the world. While the event finally made its return last year, it was a different experience than previous years. Some companies chose to attend but not exhibit, others cut down on full culinary and demo booths, and some, who were still under strict travel restrictions, decided not to attend at all. Less than two weeks out from the show, event organizers Diversified Communications reported that they were at 70% of the size of the 2019 event with 830 exhibiting companies in over 180,0000 sf of exhibit space.
