CALIFORNIA: California’s rarest salmon face a narrow window for survival

August 24, 2026 — For California’s most endangered salmon, the difference between surviving and dying may come down to just 15 days.

In a study published Friday in Science Advances, researchers say the chance of juveniles surviving fell by about 73% for every 1.8-degree Fahrenheit increase in average river temperature during those first 15 days.

Sacramento River winter-run Chinook have only one surviving population, with an average of a few thousand fish returning in recent decades.

Shasta Dam keeps the salmon from returning to their original cold-water habitat around Mount Shasta in Northern California. Instead, they spawn in the Sacramento River, where warmer summer water can threaten their developing eggs.

Cold water is released from Shasta Reservoir to keep the river cool enough for salmon eggs to survive, but that water is also needed by farms and cities.

The balance becomes harder in dry years, when there’s less water to go around.

Kohma Arai, who conducted the research as a postdoctoral scholar at UC Davis, said a full summer of spawning doesn’t necessarily mean a successful season.

Can Habitat Restoration Help Salmon Recover? Prairie Creek Offers Clues

August 7, 2026 — When any habitat restoration project finishes, a critical question remains: Will the project help threatened fish and other species recover? Answering that question requires rigorous long-term monitoring.

At the Prairie Creek salmon habitat restoration project in Northern California, researchers from NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Habitat Conservation, Cal Poly Humboldt, and other partners have conducted monitoring before, during, and after construction to determine whether the project would improve the survival prospects of threatened Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast coho salmon.

The project transformed a former lumber mill site into wetlands, side channels, and off-channel ponds where juvenile salmon can rest, feed, and grow before migrating to the Pacific Ocean. Juvenile salmon that grow big and strong in freshwater have a better chance of surviving their time in the ocean and returning as adults to spawn.

Early findings suggest that juvenile coho salmon using the restored habitat are growing faster and experiencing higher ocean survival than prior generations from the same watershed. Preexisting monitoring data going back to 2011 gave the team an unusually long baseline against which to measure change. Their findings are also changing what scientists understand about how juvenile salmon use coastal watersheds.

ALASKA: State denies Ketchikan tribe’s request to open green crab fishery

August 4, 2026 —  The Ketchikan Indian Community submitted an emergency petition to the state’s Board of Fisheries in March, asking to reclassify European green crabs from a Class A to a Class B banned invasive species.

This change would allow anybody to transport dead European green crabs for harvest or consumption. Currently, the invasive can only be possessed or transported for scientific or educational purposes by those with an Aquatic Resource Permit.

“This isn’t an issue that’s going anywhere, and it seems to be largely ignored throughout much of the state,” said Emily Halsell, a fisheries and wildlife biologist with the Ketchikan Indian Community.

Halsell is leading a green crab monitoring and removal program, which officially kicked off last fall. The tribe has removed about 1,500 green crabs from Ketchikan beaches so far this year.

In its petition to the state, the tribe cites the species’ damaging impacts to the local ecosystem and economy. The adaptive critter can burrow and destroy eelgrass beds, which are nurseries for native species like Dungeness crabs and juvenile salmon. They can also compete with native crab species for the same resources.
