Global wild-caught shrimp making progress on sustainability, but still face challenges

September 1, 2026 — Over the last two decades, the percentage of the world’s shrimp supply coming from wild-caught fisheries has gradually taken up a smaller piece of the pie.

The most recent statistics on wild-caught shrimp place it at 29 percent of the world’s total supply of shrimp, and of that, one-third of global catch is taken up by China, with India’s production also rapidly growing. According to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which shared the info during the Wild-Caught Shrimp Summit it hosts alongside the Global Shrimp Forum in Utrecht, Netherlands, more and more of those fisheries are beginning to take up MSC certification.

‘We’re facing a double whammy’: America’s hottest tinned fish snack is shrinking by nearly half thanks to climate change and war in Iran

August 31, 2026 — Tinned fish is having a real global moment. The pandemic-era pantry habit has since turned into restaurants nationwide serving tinned fish straight out of the can. Domestically, sales climbed from $2.3 billion in 2018 to more than $2.7 billion in 2024, and the U.S.’s obsession with sardines specifically is only accelerating: Americans bought $3.52 billion worth of shelf-stable seafood over the past year, and sardines have overtaken salmon as the second-most-popular canned fish behind tuna, as Grubhub reported orders of tinned fish tripled in 2025. The global tinned fish market was worth roughly $10.24 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $17.97 billion by 2034. Canned sardines are a meaningful part of that worldwide push.

But the supply behind that growing appetite is shrinking fast. Morocco, the world’s top sardine supplier, saw its fish landings fall nearly 46% between 2022 and 2024, and the reasons are feeding into each other. Because sardines are unusually sensitive to temperature, warming water as a result of climate change is pushing the fish into new territories farther away from fishermen.

The war in Iran, coupled with the effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz (through which one-fifth of the world’s global oil supply normally passes), is driving up fuel costs. Fishermen now need to go farther to catch the fish, just as it’s costing them that much more to travel longer distances, and they’re bringing back almost half the quantity as before.

Rashid Sumaila, a professor and Canada Research Chair in interdisciplinary ocean and fisheries economics at the University of British Columbia, has spent his career studying fisheries and how they navigate geopolitical forces. He said the combination is something he hadn’t seen affect the fishing industry in quite this way before.

“Sardines are very sensitive to climate change, and we know it here on the Pacific Coast,” Sumaila told Fortune. “When it’s warm, sardines move from Mexico through the U.S., and Canadians see more sardines. They follow the temperature.”

He said Morocco’s sardines are shifting, too, and he saw the same thing while on a trip to Portugal this summer, when he left his hotel at 2 a.m. for an early flight and the temperature was still 34°C (91°F).

“Some of that 45% drop is partly climate change, and partly overfishing, and other things happening to the ocean,” he said. “There’s just so much. You have pollution, plastic. Stresses upon stresses.”

The Iran war adds a second layer. While Iran’s own waters are not a major sardine source, Sumaila said the war still reaches Moroccan boats through the price of fuel.

“The Iran war doesn’t quite impact this directly,” he said, “but indirectly it does, because prices are going up. The price of fishing, the vessels, the energy. It’s crazy.”

Since the conflict began, Brent crude surged 10% to 13% after the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed to shipping this spring, an event the International Energy Agency called the largest oil-supply disruption in the market’s history. Sumaila said he heard the same complaint from fishermen thousands of miles from the Persian Gulf.

“Thai fishers are feeling it,” he said. “You can imagine Moroccan fishers, or fishers in Africa or the Pacific Islands, feeling it too.”

MSC annual report highlights record year for seafood certification program

August 29, 2026 — A record number of fisheries re-certified to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard in the past year, according to the organization’s latest annual report.

The MSC is closing in on 30 years in existence, having formed in 1997 as a nonprofit organization before launching the MSC Fisheries Standard in 1998. Since that time, the organization has continued growing; according to its annual report, it recently reached 789 fisheries engaged in the program, an increase of 7 percent year over year, with 600 certified to the MSC Fishery Standard and a record 115 re-certifications in the past year.

Amazon greenwashing lawsuit drags dialogue around certification overreliance back into the spotlight

August 24, 2026 — After the filing of another seafood greenwashing lawsuit recently, suppliers, retailers, and restaurants are yet again evaluating the best ways to market their products.

In late July, a class-action lawsuit was filed targeting retail giant Amazon, alleging that several seafood brands selling on the platform and associated retailers misleadingly use sustainability claims on several products bearing Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification.

Less than a year into the ban, is NOAA’s MMPA comparability finding having the intended impact?

August 25, 2026 — On January 1st, 2026, NOAA Fisheries implemented new import prohibitions under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), banning seafood imports that failed a comparability finding. According to the findings, 240 fisheries from 46 countries failed to adequately protect marine mammals and were subsequently blocked from exporting their products to the U.S. Eight months later, this policy is noticeably affecting companies that produce the now-banned products. But the impact on the water is more difficult to measure and may not be going as NOAA intended.

I purchase seafood for a U.S.-based importing company that specializes in sushi ingredients. We recently visited a yellowfin tuna first receiver and processor near Tuy Hòa, Vietnam, and asked how operations have changed since the import ban on January 1st. This company processes yellowfin tuna for raw consumption, exporting “sashimi-grade” products to Europe, Japan, China, and its largest market, the U.S. Some of the raw material is handline-caught from a nearby fishery improvement project. This fishing method met the comparability study standards and has not been banned. But when handline fishing is slow, as it has been in recent years, fishers deploy gillnets to boost their catch. NOAA’s comparability findings determined that yellowfin tuna caught using gillnets do not meet MMPA standards and therefore can no longer be imported when caught in Vietnamese fisheries.

Canada announces retaliatory tariffs on US, targets fish and seafood

August 25, 2026 — The government of Canada has announced a sweeping set of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, including 25 percent duties on fish and seafood.

The U.S. and Canada had been undergoing trade talks after U.S. President Donald Trump continuously threatened Canada with tariffs since taking office in January 2025, including threats of 100 percent tariffs in February 2026 after Canada and China finalized a trade deal. Those trade talks had become rocky in recent months, with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer announcing tariffs as high as 50 percent on Canadian goods in July, even as the two countries discuss the United States, Mexico, Canada agreement (USMCA) – a trade deal that Trump established in 2020.

How AI is reshaping ocean science

August 21, 2026 — Stark against the white Antarctic terrain, a small, yellow robot moves roughly one centimeter per second. Too fast, and it might spoil its mission: to gather data on a colony of emperor penguins that call the Southern Ocean home.

Artificial intelligence recognition tools help the robot, called ECHO, spot when the penguins start to get spooked. A green box over the penguin signals that it’s calm, but a red box signals stress.

To keep the boxes green, ECHO must approach very slowly, said Daniel Zitterbart, associate scientist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the project lead on ECHO.

“The good thing is a robot doesn’t get bored,” he said.

AI tools are quietly transforming how ocean scientists gather and analyze information from the watery deep. Researchers from WHOI, the University of Rhode Island, and the UMass Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) have either employed AI tools for decades or are looking to incorporate the technology into future projects, exponentially increasing the volume of data they’re able to collect.

These new applications, often going hand in hand with work seeking to better understand climate change, come as the technology faces backlash from environmental advocates concerned about the amount of water and electricity necessary to sustain it.

In some ways, researchers say the technology is a boon in an era when scientists need to do more with less federal funding. But these researchers are also quick to point out that AI tools will never replace human scientists — and the public money that funds them.

“There is no AI that can help me go out in the field and catch a penguin,” Zitterbart said. “To learn about the natural world, you still need to go into the natural world.”

Businesses, NGOs pushing for IATTC to adopt management procedures for tropical tuna

August 21, 2026 — Businesses and environmental NGOs are both working to push the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) into adopting its first-ever management procedures for tuna at its next meeting, which starts on 24 August.

Groups have been pushing the regional fishery management organization (RFMO) to adopt management procedures for multiple species it governs. Management procedures, also called harvest strategies, are a means of setting predetermined triggers on how a species is managed so that an RFMO has a clear roadmap for how to adjust fishing effort based on what surveys and scientific analysis of a stock indicate.

US embassy launched IUU reporting hub in the Philippines

August 14, 2026 — The U.S. Embassy in the Philippines has launched a new initiative to gather community reports of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing around the Southeast Asian nation and share them with authorities.

“Illegal, unreported, and unregulated [IUU] fishing is both an economic and a national security challenge. It depletes fish stocks, disrupts supply chains, distorts markets, threatens food security, and places responsible fishers and legitimate businesses at a disadvantage,” U.S. Embassy Officer Taylor Fincher said in a release. “Addressing illegal fishing and related maritime concerns is an important area of cooperation between the United States and the Philippines.”

Satellite Tracking Spots Suspicious Activity from 12 Chinese Fishing Vessels in Peruvian Waters

October 17th, 2016 — At least a dozen Chinese vessels have illegally fished inside Peru’s national waters between January 2015 and September 2016, according to data analyzed by the satellite tracking platform Global Fishing Watch. This data suggests that over the course of the last year, Hong Pu5, Shung Feng 002 and several other vessels entered Peruvian waters at least once to fish in violation of international law.

Global Fishing Watch — a joint initiative of Oceana, SkyTruth and Google — uses navigation technology known as the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to track the movements of nearly 40,000 commercial fishing vessels around the world. AIS transmits a vessel’s identity, type, location, course and speed. Global Fishing Watch’s algorithm uses this information to identify fishing patterns, which helps fisheries officials and enforcement agencies spot potential criminal activity.

According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), illegal fishing in Peru is responsible for $360 million in losses each year. Peru is something of a “paradise” for pirate fishing, said Juan Carlos Sueiro, Oceana Peru’s fisheries director.

While neighbors Colombia, Chile and Ecuador have ratified a new FAO treaty aimed at curbing the trade in illegal fish in port cities, Peru has dragged its heels. As a result, Sueiro said, Chinese and other foreign vessels suspected of illegal fishing can freely dock, refuel, buy food and offload their catch in Peru.
