2026’s El Niño is shaping up to be a doozy – it’s already affecting global shipping, fish behavior and heat

September 14, 2026 — El Niño is here, and forecasters warn that it’s likely to be bigger and stronger in 2026-27 than any El Niño event recorded in at least 150 years.

During strong El Niños, global air and ocean temperatures spike, and precipitation patterns shift dramatically – flooding rains deluge places that are normally dry, and drought strikes some of the wettest locations on earth. With this El Niño arriving on top of already high global ocean and air temperatures, it carries the potential for extraordinary impacts to millions of lives throughout the world. Globally, August 2026 was the hottest month on record, according to data from Europe’s Copernicus climate service.

Those effects are already showing up in Central and South America.

Fishing crews in Ecuador are catching fewer tuna and traveling farther from shore to find them as fish migrate to cooler water. Coral reefs are under alert for severe risk of bleaching in many areas.

In Panama, where I live, seabirds common to Ecuador and Peru known as blue-footed boobies began showing up in large numbers in Panama earlier than usual as the sardines and anchovies they eat moved northward to escape the El Niño ocean heat.

Farmers in some regions of Panama have been unable to plant their crops. And many people here are worried about access to drinking water in the coming dry season, normally January to April but predicted to arrive at least a month earlier than usual.

The global economy is also beginning to see far-reaching effects. Worsening drought is reducing the amount of water needed to operate the Panama Canal, resulting in fewer ships with less cargo able to pass through in a day. That leads to higher transit costs for shippers of all kinds of products and slower deliveries.

I am a biologist who has been monitoring the weather in Panama and surrounding regions for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute for almost 40 years. That includes major climatic events such as El Niño, and what I am seeing in Panama in 2026 in terms of heat and drought has already begun to exceed anything that we have measured here in over a century.

Climate change may halve omega‑3 fatty acids in fish and the organisms they eat

August 31, 2026 — You’ve probably heard eating fish and other seafood is good for your health. One of the main reasons is that seafood is an excellent source of two important omega-3 fats called EPA and DHA.

EPA and DHA are critical for the development and function of brains, eyes and healthy hearts. They also reduce chronic inflammation, which is linked to many chronic diseases. They can also reduce the risk of premature births and perhaps even some types of cancer.

While humans can produce EPA and DHA from ALA (an omega-3 fat found in plants) and it’s possible to get them from foods such as linseed and walnuts, seafood is the main source for most people.

However, our new study shows many fish and other seafood will become less rich in omega-3s over time, due to rising ocean temperatures as the climate changes. In fact, we found omega-3 could drop by 50% under very high warming scenarios.

This is very bad news for human health but also for the health of other animals in the food web.

Earth is simmering in its hottest water temps on record, and that’s bad for fish and us

August 25, 2026 — The world’s oceans simmered to their hottest temperatures on record over the weekend and are likely to warm even further in the next few months, putting stress on life in the water and on land too, the European climate service Copernicus announced Monday.

Spurred by a still growing but already supersized natural El Nino and human-caused climate change, the world’s ocean temperatures hit 21.1 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) on Friday and Saturday, narrowly edging out the average daily record set in March 2024, said Samantha Burgess, strategic climate lead for Copernicus.

“This is yet another sign of our climate system under strain and the ocean under immense pressure,” Burgess said.

Jane Lubchenco, an oceanographer and former chief of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called the record “very troubling.”

“An ocean this warm destabilizes weather patterns and threatens food security, economic prosperity and marine life,” Lubchenco said in an email. “A warmer ocean is not our friend.”

IFFO reports weak fishmeal and fish oil output as El Niño impacts fisheries

August 20, 2026 — IFFO – the Marine Ingredients Organization is reporting continued weak output of fishmeal and fish oil as a coastal El Niño weather pattern impacts raw material availability.

Scientists warned in July that a “Super” El Niño was likely to develop in 2026, causing a wave of different impacts on multiple global fisheries. Fisheries were already anticipating the phenomenon before it started to gain strength but, ultimately, could do little but react to warming water.

Subsidies, fragmented enforcement hampering progress on fighting illegal fishing, research finds

August 17, 2026 — A study conducted by researchers at the University of British Columbia has found that industrial-scale illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing accounts for as much as 15 percent of global marine wild capture and is estimated to be worth between USD 6.2 billion and USD 12.2 billion (EUR 5.4 billion and EUR 10.5 billion).

The study, titled “Casting light on the workings of illegal fishing markets,” found that roughly two-thirds of illicit seafood trade by value originates in West Africa, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, with the bulk of the illegal catch consumed in North America, Europe, and East Asia.

El Niño Alters Marine Life in the Pacific

August 11, 2026 — As of June 2026, El Niño has officially arrived. This naturally recurring phenomenon is characterized by warmer-than-normal water temperatures in parts of the equatorial Pacific along with changes to atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns. Its regional effects range from desert floods to delayed monsoons to shifts in where tropical cyclones are more likely to form.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center expects the current El Niño to continue to strengthen through the end of 2026, with a 97 percent chance of lasting through early Northern Hemisphere spring 2027. Even during El Niño’s early stages, satellites have observed characteristic changes along the equatorial Pacific, such as warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures and higher-than-normal sea surface height.

Among the first ecological downstream effects are changes to the marine food web. The maps above show chlorophyll-a concentrations—the pigment present in most phytoplankton—as observed by the OCI (Ocean Color Instrument) on NASA’s PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite. In June 2025 (left), conditions were neutral, while in June 2026 (right), El Niño was strengthening.

Section 301 tariffs leave US seafood importers with few avenues to avoid rising costs

August 10, 2026 — The latest round of tariffs implemented by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) targeted several countries that heavily produce salmon and shrimp with duty rates between 10 percent and 12.5 percent, leaving U.S. seafood importers with few options for relief from rising costs.

The 60 global economies hit with Section 301 tariffs include top salmon-producing countries such as Norway, Chile, and the U.K., as well as shrimp-producing nations like Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Climate-driven disruption, constrained supply adding volatility to aquaculture markets in the back half of 2026

August 7, 2026 — Global aquaculture firms and the wider value chain entered the second half of 2026 facing a difficult combination of constrained supply, rising feed costs, climate uncertainty, and uneven consumer demand, according to Rabobank’s latest Global Aquaculture Update.

After weathering several major disruptions over the past decade, the industry has now entered a phase in which climate change, tightening feed ingredient supplies, and geopolitical uncertainty are reshaping global seafood markets, Rabobank Seafood Analyst Novel Sharma told SeafoodSource, explaining the industry should plan for continual uncertainty rather than treat each challenge as an isolated disruption.

Trump hits Brazil with 25 percent tariffs, but seafood manages to win exceptions

July 16, 2026 — The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on Brazil, with several exceptions for certain seafood items.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced new 25 percent tariffs on imports from Brazil following a Section 301 investigation. The USTR said the tariff action follows an investigation it started in 2025, just days after Trump threatened 50 percent tariffs on the country claiming it was treating former Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro unfairly. USTR Ambassador Jamieson Greer said at the time the country’s unfair trade practices were documented in the National Trade Estimate Report, and a recent release by the USTR said it identified several practices by Brazil that gave it an unfair advantage over U.S. businesses.

Sentient Media Article Omits Major Scientific Debate Over Forage Fish

July 15, 2026 — An article published today by Gaea Cabico in Sentient Media criticizes the use of fishmeal in livestock feeds, including feeds used in raising pigs and chickens, and argues that converting wild-caught fish into animal feed can come at the expense of marine ecosystems.

That is a legitimate subject for examination. But the article’s treatment of forage fish science is incomplete.

To support its argument, the article relies heavily on the 2012 report Little Fish, Big Impact, produced by the Lenfest Forage Fish Task Force and chaired by Ellen Pikitch. It cites the task force’s findings concerning the importance of forage fish to marine predators and repeats its recommendation that forage fish catch rates generally be limited to half the rate associated with maximum sustainable yield.

What the article does not tell readers is that the Lenfest report’s analysis and broad management recommendations later became the subject of a significant peer-reviewed scientific debate.

Prominent Scientists Challenged the Lenfest Conclusions

In 2017, fisheries scientists Ray Hilborn, Ricardo O. Amoroso, Eugenia Bogazzi, Olaf P. Jensen, Ana M. Parma, Cody Szuwalski, and Carl J. Walters published When Does Fishing Forage Species Affect Their Predators? in the journal Fisheries Research.

Their analysis directly questioned whether the Lenfest task force’s generalized conclusions could reliably be applied across different forage species, predator populations, and marine ecosystems.

Among other concerns, Hilborn and his coauthors argued that the Lenfest analysis did not adequately account for:

  • The extreme natural variability of forage fish populations, even in the absence of fishing;
  • The geographic distribution of forage fish and the spatial overlap among predators, prey, and fishing activity;
  • Differences between the sizes of forage fish consumed by predators and those harvested by fisheries;
  • Predators’ ability to switch among prey species; and
  • The distinction between a predator consuming a forage species and the predator population actually being controlled by the abundance of that species.

The authors reported that there was limited evidence of a consistently strong relationship between aggregate forage fish abundance and changes in predator abundance. They concluded that the effects of forage fishing should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and that broad reductions in harvest rates are not necessarily appropriate for every fishery or ecosystem.

The Lenfest Authors Responded — and the Debate Continued

The Lenfest task force authors responded in the same journal, defending the strength of the connection between forage fish and their predators. Hilborn and his coauthors then published a further rebuttal.

That exchange is important because it shows that the Lenfest report was not the final word on the issue and that its conclusions were not universally accepted.

The scientists on both sides generally agreed that ecosystem effects should be considered in fisheries management. But they disagreed substantially over:

  • The strength and consistency of predator-prey relationships;
  • The adequacy of the models and assumptions used in the Lenfest analysis;
  • The extent to which fishing affects predator populations; and
  • Whether broad precautionary harvest rules should be applied across very different fisheries.

A responsible account of the science should acknowledge that disagreement.

The Article Presents One Side as Settled Science

The Sentient Media article quotes Pikitch, summarizes the Lenfest task force’s findings, and presents its recommended catch-rate reduction without identifying the scientists or research that challenged those conclusions.

That omission creates the impression that the Lenfest recommendations reflect an uncontested scientific consensus. They do not.

This matters because the article makes broad claims about reduction fisheries and the use of fishmeal in livestock production around the world. Forage species, ecosystems, predator dependencies, fishing methods, end uses, and management systems vary considerably.

A small pelagic fishery in one region cannot automatically be assumed to have the same ecological effects as a fishery targeting a different species in another ecosystem. Nor can all species commonly grouped under the label “forage fish” be treated as ecologically interchangeable.

The later peer-reviewed research cautions against exactly that kind of broad generalization.

Fishmeal Policy Should Be Based on Fishery-Specific Evidence

There are valid questions to ask about the sourcing and use of fishmeal, including whether particular fisheries are sustainably managed, whether stocks are healthy, whether ecosystem needs are incorporated into management, and whether fish are being used efficiently.

But those questions should be answered using fishery-specific evidence, not by treating a disputed 2012 report as though it settled the science for every forage fishery in the world.

A meaningful evaluation should examine, at minimum:

  • The status of the individual stock;
  • The fishery’s harvest controls;
  • The natural variability of the population;
  • The species’ role in the local food web;
  • The availability of alternative prey;
  • The spatial relationship between fishing activity and predators; and
  • The actual end uses of the harvested fish.

Some fisheries may warrant greater precaution. Others may already be conservatively managed and operating within ecosystem-based frameworks. Those distinctions are essential.

Readers Deserve the Full Scientific Record

Acknowledging the criticism of the Lenfest report would not require Sentient Media to adopt Hilborn and his coauthors’ conclusions.

It would simply require the publication to tell readers that a major scientific disagreement exists.

A balanced treatment would note that, in 2017, a group of prominent fisheries scientists challenged the generality of the Lenfest task force’s findings. It would also explain that the Lenfest authors disputed that criticism and that the two groups continued the debate in the peer-reviewed literature.

That context is particularly important when an article uses the Lenfest report to support broad policy claims about fishmeal, livestock production, and marine ecosystems.

Readers should be given the complete scientific picture, not one side of a contested debate presented as settled fact.
