PROVIDENCE, RI (February 25, 2009) — A federal grant will let researchers at the University of Rhode Island study ocean dead zones that are fatal to fish and other sea creatures.
U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced the grant of more than $728,000 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Tuesday.
Sewage and other pollutants released into the sea are believed to cause many fish kills, or hypoxia, by depleting oxygen levels in the water.
