Washington's two U.S. senators spoke warmly Tuesday of Ted Stevens, who was killed in an Alaska plane crash.
Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. an Appropriations Committee colleague, praised Stevens, a Senate colleague for 16 years, as a man who "knew how to compromise" and a close friend.
While sometimes Stevens Senate rival, Sen. Maria Cantwell, also a Democrat, added, "obviously, he is in my thoughts and prayers."
Murray is, like the Republican Stevens was, a powerful member of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Stevens was Alaska's provider, pork-barreler and builder for 39 years in Congress' upper chamber.
