NEW BEDFORD — The two congressmen representing the state's leading fishing ports say they are "disappointed" and "troubled" at being left out of the nomination process for a new secretary of commerce, and they are worried that the nominee's background as an environmentalist could be a serious problem.
U.S. Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and John Tierney, D-Mass., issued a statement Wednesday sharply critical of the White House for the manner in which businessman and environmentalist John Bryson was nominated to head the department that regulates fisheries.
Bryson was one of the founders of the Natural Resources Defense Council in 1970. The group has been a frequent litigant over fisheries management issues.
