July 30, 2013 — Shrimp trawlers have arrived in New Bern in a show of unity before today’s hearing on a proposal that would halt shrimp trawling in North Carolina’s inshore waters.
A petition for rulemaking has been filed asking the N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission to adopt a rule that makes the state’s internal coastal water permanent secondary nursery areas.
The reclassification of the waters would end shrimp trawling in the inshore waters, which fishermen say is where a bulk of the shrimp in North Carolina is harvested.
The four advisory committees of the Marine Fisheries Commission are meeting at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center beginning at 12:30 p.m. to discuss the petition and hear public comment.
