Food and Water Watch, Inc. a national, non-profit public interest consumer-advocacy organization, has moved to join the cities of New Bedford and Gloucester and members of the fishing industry in their lawsuit against NOAA which focuses on Amendment 16.
According to the papers files, Food and Water Watch (FWW) works to ensure safe food and clean water by advocating for wholesome food produced in a humane and sustainable manner, and public rather than private control of water resources. The FWW Fish Program promotes safe and sustainable seafood for consumers while helping to protect the environment and supporting the long-term well-being of coastal and fishing communities. There are more than 3,2000 FWW members in New England, New York and New Jersey, including conservationists, consumers, and commercial and recreational fishermen and fisherwomen (collectively “fishermen”), who care about the sustainability of the product they produce.
Food and Water Watch states that NOAA failed to: (1) submit the Amendment to a referendum prior to its final approval by the Secretary, (2) failed to adequately assess the Amendment‟s socioeconomic impacts and (3) failed to adequately analyze the Amendment‟s environmental impacts, in violation of 42 U.S.C. § 4332(2)(C)(i).
