Ahead of the Sixth World Fisheries Congress in Edinburgh in May, vice-president of the congress Michel Kaiser has detailed some of the events which will be taking place.
n an interview with the American Fisheries Society, Kaiser said: “There are four main themes within the meeting. The first two themes focus on the science needed to achieve sustainable wild capture fisheries and encompass marine and freshwater systems. The third theme deals with issues relating to ecosystem resilience and the governance and management regimes required to achieve sustainable fisheries. The final main theme addresses the increasingly important role of aquaculture as a source of food and nutrition.”
The main speakers at the event are Professor Sir John Beddington FRS, chief scientific advisor to the UK government and founder of Marine Resources and Fisheries Consultants; population ecologist Professor Ray Hilborn; Dr Malcolm Beveridge, director of aquaculture and genetics at the Worldfish Centre; and Mike Mitchell, head of corporate social responsibility for Findus.
