CEBU, Philippines — November 22, 2013 — The Philippine government will spearhead efforts to revive the fishing industry in the country's central regions after it was badly damaged by typhoon "Yolanda" (Haiyan), an official said Friday.
Asis Perez, director of the fisheries and aquatic resources bureau, said that in Eastern Visayas region alone, which initially bore the brunt of the Nov. 8 typhoon, some 58,000 fishermen were affected.
"By Monday, we will have launched the campaign for 10,000 immediate new boats. We estimate that no less than 20,000 fishing boats were destroyed," Perez said.
