NOAA to rebuild historic science lab in Beaufort, North Carolina

August 28, 2026 — Today, NOAA announced plans to fund the reconstruction of a new laboratory in Beaufort, North Carolina. This new lab will replace the former building that was permanently closed in 2024 due to significant hurricane-related structural damage. The project will be funded using $64 million from the 2025 Disaster Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act. Design and preconstruction work is expected to begin in early 2027.

Established in 1899, the NOAA Beaufort Laboratory is the nation’s second-oldest federal marine science laboratory, predating NOAA by more than 70 years. Following a routine inspection, NOAA determined the laboratory sustained foundational damage that made building occupancy unsafe. The new facility will be built above the floodplain and designed to withstand storm and flooding events.

ALASKA: St. Paul’s new research vessel marks a milestone in effort to rebuild local economy

August 28, 2026 — The Pribilof Islands community of St. Paul is now the homeport for a research vessel. The 50-foot Eventide arrived in St. Paul late last month, marking a major milestone for the community.

John Wayne Melovidov is president of the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government. He said St. Paul is working to build a research economy after declines in the local fishing industry. The island’s Trident Seafood plant closed after the Bering Sea crab fishery crashed in 2022. Melovidov said monitoring the area’s crab, halibut and fur seal populations will be especially important.

“If anybody should be doing the research on what’s going on with our species out in our backyard, it should be us,” he said. “So we set up a lab to do that research ourselves, but also to invite other scientists to do whatever research they want to do.”

How AI is reshaping ocean science

August 21, 2026 — Stark against the white Antarctic terrain, a small, yellow robot moves roughly one centimeter per second. Too fast, and it might spoil its mission: to gather data on a colony of emperor penguins that call the Southern Ocean home.

Artificial intelligence recognition tools help the robot, called ECHO, spot when the penguins start to get spooked. A green box over the penguin signals that it’s calm, but a red box signals stress.

To keep the boxes green, ECHO must approach very slowly, said Daniel Zitterbart, associate scientist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the project lead on ECHO.

“The good thing is a robot doesn’t get bored,” he said.

AI tools are quietly transforming how ocean scientists gather and analyze information from the watery deep. Researchers from WHOI, the University of Rhode Island, and the UMass Dartmouth School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) have either employed AI tools for decades or are looking to incorporate the technology into future projects, exponentially increasing the volume of data they’re able to collect.

These new applications, often going hand in hand with work seeking to better understand climate change, come as the technology faces backlash from environmental advocates concerned about the amount of water and electricity necessary to sustain it.

In some ways, researchers say the technology is a boon in an era when scientists need to do more with less federal funding. But these researchers are also quick to point out that AI tools will never replace human scientists — and the public money that funds them.

“There is no AI that can help me go out in the field and catch a penguin,” Zitterbart said. “To learn about the natural world, you still need to go into the natural world.”

A Winter at Sea Reveals Seasonal Habits of Whales, Dolphins, and Seabirds in Hawaiʻi

August 21, 2026 — The Hawaiian archipelago is teeming with marine life, and winter brings some of the most exciting activity of the year. It’s a season when many whale and seabird species travel to the islands. Migratory baleen whales such as humpback and minke whales are only found in Hawai‘i in the winter, when they seek warmer waters to breed. Others—including various types of dolphins—rely on this marine ecosystem year-round, but scientists have yet to uncover the details of their wintertime habits.

To close that gap, the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center launched a survey in late January 2026. Scientists spent 2 months monitoring these species around the main Hawaiian islands aboard the NOAA Ship Oscar Elton Sette. The mission, called the Winter Hawaiian Islands Cetacean and Ecosystem Assessment Survey, is only the second of its kind.

Six years after the first winter survey, researchers returned to better understand where, when, and how many whales and dolphins use this habitat. The data from these surveys feed into stock assessments, helping us track the status of these species and make informed conservation decisions. This work is especially important for high-priority species like false killer whales, including an endangered population that lives around the main Hawaiian islands.

Winter conditions at sea can be rough, with higher swells and lots of white caps. This makes animals harder to see. But NOAA scientists are experienced with scientific methods that rise to the challenge. During the survey, eagle-eyed visual observers spied more than 200 groups of whales and dolphins, even in difficult conditions. They documented humpback mothers with their calves, bottlenose dolphins riding the ship’s bow, and pantropical spotted dolphins leaping high into the air. Cutting-edge passive acoustic technology helped detect other whales and dolphins that could be heard but not seen.

North Carolina State University researchers discover “fluffy net” can capture underwater microplastics

August 19, 2026 — A study recently published in Science Advances, funded by the National Science Foundation, found using a biopolymer mesh in a web-like formation – similar to that of seaweed – can capture oceanic microplastics in both freshwater and seawater environments as a powerful anti-pollution tool.

Four researchers from Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A.-based North Carolina State University’s department of chemical and biomedical engineering published the study: “Artificial Neptune balls: Superadhesive biomimetic networks for broad-size microplastics capture and removal.”

Study piloting use of black soldier flies to solve Florida’s sargassum issues

August 18, 2026 — A new study by the University of Miami is trying to determine whether black soldier fly larvae could be a scalable solution to the U.S. state of Florida’s sargassum problem.

Florida’s Atlantic coast is regularly hit by “sargassum inundation events,” which cover the shoreline in massive piles of the seaweed. Researchers have determined the problem has been beginning earlier in the year, and in 2026, South Florida’s shores have been hit with a record-breaking bloom, according to the study’s authors.

$15M grant aims to protect New England’s ‘legacy’ seafood industry

August 17, 2026 — This grant will fund new fishery technology and innovations, which will help researchers at URI and other partners better understand the changing sea environment.

The seafood industry has long been an economic driver in Rhode Island, but it’s facing a number of challenges — including rising costs, warming waters and an aging workforce. In an effort to combat these obstacles, the National Science Foundation has awarded a $15 million grant to the University of Rhode Island and several regional partners.

Morning host Luis Hernandez spoke with Marta Gomez-Chiarri, an aquaculture and fisheries professor at URI, about how her lab is hoping to use the money to spur technological innovations that can help strengthen the health and viability of the local seafood industry.
