Webinar Invite: New Research to Identify Climate-vulnerable Stock Assessments

Project Background

Regional Fisheries Management Councils rely on stock assessments to help set catch limits. However, climate change can impact the ability to accurately assess a fish stock. For example, it can change a fish stock’s recruitment and natural mortality rates, a species’ range and distribution, and overall stock productivity. In order to support long-term sustainable fisheries management, there is a need to understand which stock assessments are at greatest risk from climate change and how to integrate risk into the stock assessment process. The Lenfest Ocean Program is supporting Dr. Olaf Jensen, University of Wisconsin, to lead a team of researchers to identify and prioritize fish and invertebrate populations that are at greatest risk of stock assessment failure due to climate change.

This project is an outcome of the Lenfest Ocean Program Ideas Lab, a workshop held in October 2019 to identify research priorities for shifting marine species. Learn more here.

West Coast fishing communities’ vulnerability to climate change assessed in new study

April 17, 2020 — Climate change is warping the West Coast marine ecosystem. Warm waters are driving species north. Acidification and deoxygenation are threatening coastal species.

Fishermen are intimately familiar with these impacts. When the marine heat wave of 2014 and 2015 – dubbed “the Blob” – raised water temperatures for months on end, fishermen saw landing revenues of salmon and hake drop. That heat wave foreshadowed the increased and more severe heat waves that are likely to come.

ASGA Hires New Executive Director

March 30, 2020 — The following was released by the American Saltwater Guides Association:

The American Saltwater Guides Association (ASGA), a coalition of forward-thinking guides, small business owners and like-minded anglers who understand the value of keeping fish in the water, today announced that William (“Willy”) M. Goldsmith, Ph.D., has joined the organization as Executive Director, effective April 1, 2020.  In this role, Goldsmith will advise on policy and regulatory strategy and lead membership outreach and engagement, fundraising and day-to-day operations.

A lifelong angler with a background in fisheries science, Goldsmith joins the ASGA after spending the past two years working in fishery management in Washington, DC, first as a Sea Grant Knauss Fellow with Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) and more recently at the Lenfest Ocean Program.  In those roles, Willy engaged with fishery stakeholders and constituents on key management issues and communicated policy-relevant research to decision-makers.  Before arriving in Washington, DC, he received a doctorate in Marine Science with a sub-concentration in Marine Policy from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at William and Mary, where his research focused on characterizing the biological impacts and human dimensions of the U.S. east coast recreational Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery. He received a B.A. in History with a Secondary Field in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University.

“A year ago, we set out to provide a powerful voice to the recreational fishing community to support the conservation of our fisheries, and have made a material impact on the way a number of important fish are managed on the East Coast,” said Peter Jenkins, Chairman of the ASGA Board of Directors and Owner of the Saltwater Edge tackle shop in Newport, Rhode Island.  “Our work is just getting started, and adding someone with Willy’s experience, contacts and understanding of the way fisheries are managed will enable us to more effectively engage on critical management issues for the benefit of fishing guides, tackle shops and other businesses in the fishing industry, and conservation-minded anglers everywhere.”

“Willy has quickly become a well-known and respected fishery management mind in Washington, DC, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the ASGA team,” said Tony Friedrich, Vice-President and Policy Director of the ASGA.  “In addition to his exceptional grasp of both fishery science and policy, Willy shares the passion for fishing that we were founded on and is committed to helping ensure that we have abundant marine resources for generations to come.  We are proud of what we have accomplished in our first year, but believe Willy’s addition will allow us to significantly accelerate our impact as we continue to fight for abundant and responsibly managed fish stocks that support the needs of the recreational angling community and the businesses that rely on them.”

“I have closely followed the ASGA since it was founded, and am honored and humbled at the opportunity to advance its mission and promote its values,” said Goldsmith.  “In a remarkably short time, the ASGA has activated and mobilized thousands of for-hire captains, private anglers, business owners and concerned citizens in the name of marine fish conservation, providing the community with a unified voice. I look forward to joining this effort and to advocating for common-sense, science-based management strategies while also building partnerships across fisheries sectors to conserve and rebuild our nation’s fisheries.”

For the past several months, Dr. Bravington has been examining the feasibility of a genetic method known as close-kin mark-recapture for estimating shortfin mako shark abundance in a way that avoids the limitations and biases associated with estimates collected through fishing activities. Such a tool could help fisheries scientists develop more accurate stock assessments to inform effective management strategies for this species, which is overfished in the North Atlantic.

TOMORROW–Webinar on Genomics for Fisheries Management: An Application to the Thorny Skate

September 17, 2019 — The following was released by the Lenfest Ocean Program:

Join the Lenfest Ocean Program on Wednesday, September 18 at 10:00 am EDT/2:00 pm GMT for a webinar featuring Dr. Gavin Naylor of the University of Florida to discuss his project on thorny skate genomics in the North Atlantic.

Dr. Naylor and his team are using modern genomic tools to tease out the spatial population structure of thorny skates and to investigate factors that may have contributed to past changes in abundance. The findings could help managers determine the appropriate spatial scale for thorny skate management and lead to the development of effective conservation strategies across the North Atlantic. The project began in 2017.

September 20: Interactive Webinar on Identifying Priorities for Shifting Marine Species

September 12, 2019 — The following was released by the Lenfest Ocean Program:

The Lenfest Ocean Program will host an interactive webinar on Friday, September 20 from 12:30 pm-2 pm ET during which participants can share their perspectives on shifting marine species. The webinar is open to anyone interested in discussing this critical issue.

This webinar is a precursor to an Ideas Lab workshop that the Lenfest Ocean Program, in collaboration with the David and Lucile Packard Foundation and the Biodiversity Funder’s Group, will host later this fall to discuss the future of U.S. fisheries in the face of climate change, generate research priorities, and kickstart the funding of key research projects. The application period for this workshop closed on August 22.

To facilitate planning around the webinar, which will include breakout discussion groups, please register by 12 pm ET on Thursday, September 19.
