The concept of community supported agriculture, in which consumers purchase a subscription or membership to a farm to receive seasonal produce boxes, has been transported from soil to sea in community supported fishery programs that have been popping up along the coastal United States. Now the first one in Northern California is set to begin on Friday at none other than Google.
This debut CSF will be available only to Google employees, but Half Moon Bay fishermen, who are heading this project, are hopeful they can expand the program to other Bay Area companies and consumers.
Already, 155 employees at the Mountain View company have expressed interest in the program, which will allow them to pick up a box of seafood every Friday at a refrigerated warehouse on the Google campus.
Because many employees are single and cook only on weekends, the boxes are designed to be small, 2 pounds of seafood or less. The price is $20 to $26 per week.
