March 9, 2013 — With the blessing of the scallop fleet, NOAA Fisheries on Wednesday approved final quotas for the 2013 fishing year that are about 35 percent lower than last year.
The cutbacks, which will last two years, are intended to avoid disturbing abundant young scallops that need a year or two to mature and grow to legal size.
Two areas off the Mid-Atlantic called Elephant Trunk and Delmarva will remain closed to scallop fishing during this period.
