CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Federal regulators on Tuesday approved catch limits for numerous species of fish caught off the Southeast coast from North Carolina to Florida.
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, which regulates fishing off the coast between three miles and 200 miles offshore, approved catch limits for fish including king mackerel, grouper and others, said Kim Iverson, a spokeswoman for the council based in Charleston.
In all, eight councils are trying to devise rules to end overfishing. Most cases involve catch limits.
Similar rules will be considered next week by the council that regulates the Gulf of Mexico. The changes must all be approved by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
