Dr. Steve Cadrin of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth School for Marine Science & Technology recently shared his expertise with our nation's political leadership. Testifying before the U.S. Congress, Dr. Cadrin detailed his concerns and recommendations at a hearing convened by a House Natural Resources subcommittee. At issue are the quality and frequency of stock assessments fostered by NOAA's peer review system — a system that often values process at the expense of outcome. These deficiencies, as Dr. Cadrin explains in this Saving Seafood interview, prevent optimal policymaking and implementation of U.S. fisheries regulations, and to answer the subcommittees question, are costing jobs.
