March 27, 2014 — The Spiny Dogfish Fishery Management Plan for the Northeast is up for amendment. And now is your chance to comment on it. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced on Wednesday, March 26 that it is taking public comment on Amendment 3 to the plan.
The public can send suggestions until May 27.
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management councils jointly manage the Atlantic spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) fishery. They implemented the current plan in 2000 because stock had been overfished. But in 2010, it was successfully rebuilt and is now determined to be too large.
