December 3, 2013 — In recent years, North Carolina estuaries have been experiencing large fish kills often associated with rains and moderate temperatures. Most of the dead fish have exhibited large, open skin ulcers.
Scientists at NCCOS analyzed the ulcerated fish collected by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) and the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation using molecular assays and provided a definitive diagnosis of ulcerative mycosis.

Global Voice returns to the Ocean Explorium on Wednesday, December 4, with Dr. Stace Beaulieu, Biology Research Specialist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). Dr. Beaulieu will discuss her study of animals at the deep seafloor level, including tubeworms, snails, and crabs at deep-sea vents. Dr. Beaulieu has visited the deep seafloor in person, diving in the submersibles Alvin and Shinkai 6500, and has used remotely-operated vehicles.
