When: August 18, 7-9:30 p.m. Where: The Coastal Institute Large Conference Room, URI East Bay Campus
Join fishermen and other industry members, fisheries scientists and fisheries policymakers for a conversation organized by the New England Fish Forum, during which you will envision the social objectives of Amendment 16 to the Groundfish Fisheries Management Plan.
During the conversation, you will respond to the following three questions:
1. What should be the social objectives for groundfish management in Amendment 16 and beyond (regional, local, family, individual)?
2. What are you concerned/hopeful about in terms of communities, families and individuals when it comes time for Amendment 16’s implementation in May 2010? (What do you think needs clarification or planning?)
3. What types of information should be tracked to monitor the social implications of Amendment 16 and future amendments to the groundfish FMP?
You will also have the chance to pose questions of your own to the group for follow up.
The meeting will create a valuable participant-generated product. Together with other fishermen, scientists and policymakers present, you will form a list of objectives and indicators that you feel are important to defining the social future of groundfish management in New England while the ecological future is also defined. The goal of the Conversation is to be productive, proactive and creative. The recommendations from this New England Fish Forum conversation along with those drawn from future meetings will be provided to the regional fisheries management councils, the NMFS Regional Office and the Northeast Fisheries Science Center.
