MASSACHUSETTS: Task force: State needs shelllfish lab

February 19, 2021 — The Massachusetts Shellfish Initiative has developed a five-year strategic plan that could overhaul the management of the state’s shellfish resources, including a recommendation for a dedicated state shellfish laboratory.

The 2021-2025 strategic plan, developed by the 21-member MSI Task Force that includes Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, recommends increased public funding for additional staff and resources at the Division of Marine Fisheries. It also seeks more public funds to promote “the economic, environmental and social benefits” of the state’s shellfish resources.

“In many cases existing state and local government resources provide insufficient support to adequately manage the state’s shellfish resources and shellfish fisheries,” the draft of the plan stated.

MASSACHUSETTS: Markey visits Cape Ann to help fishing industry

August 21, 2020 — As local fishermen navigate the rocky waves of an economic crisis in their industry, U.S. Sen. Ed Markey made a visit to Cape Ann to assure them and other that he will work hard to help steady the boat.

The senator joined Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, City Councilor Jen Holmgren, and a host of other Cape Ann residents at Maritime Gloucester on Sunday during his “Leads and Delivers” Bus Tour to discuss the hardships that fishermen are facing and how local and state aid could help.

Markey is locked in a battle to keep his seat with U.S. Rep. Joseph Kennedy III for the Democratic senate primary election.

Early Friday morning, Kennedy will be on the docks to talk fishermen about his plans to help and why he may be a better choice than Markey to represent them in the Senate.

The 5 a.m. stop will be last the congressman will make in a 24-hour stump across the state, which began with an early Thursday morning meeting with New Bedford fishermen. In between, Kennedy planned to hit Fall River, Taunton, Brockton, Boston, Chelsea, Everett, Peabody, Worcester, Springfield, Richmond and Chelmsford, documenting his visits on social media and making additional stops along the way.

Fish aid 2 weeks away

March 31, 2020 — Specific eligibility criteria and distribution details for the $300 million in federal assistance to the U.S. seafood industry probably won’t be available for at least another two weeks, Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken estimated on Monday.

Romeo Theken, who spent much of last weekend on conference calls discussing the economic and health implications of the novel coronavirus pandemic,  said she urged state and federal officials to move quickly in getting the money into the hands of fishermen, charter operators, aquaculturists, processors and other shoreside businesses financially wounded by health crisis.

“We’re fighting this invisible war and everyone has to work together or no one is going to survive this” Romeo Theken said. “The plan is very complex and very broad because, unlike previous fishery disaster assistance, this touches everybody in the commercial fishing industry from Alaska to Massachusetts.”

The mayor said she anticipates the federal funds will be distributed by the Commerce Department through NOAA Fisheries to individual regions and states, which then would manage the disbursement of funds to seafood industry stakeholders.

MASSACHUSETTS: Whole Foods committed to Gloucester, despite plant exit

June 24, 2019 — Even though Austin, Texas, U.S.A.-based Whole Foods market is closing its seafood processing facility in Gloucester, Massachusetts, it plans to continue sourcing seafood from the Bay State.

Whole Foods recently said that its North Atlantic region will be permanently closing its Pigeon Cove Seafood facility in Gloucester, effective 15 August.

The plant closing will eliminate 60 full-time positions. However, Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken said that Linda Shear, executive coordinator of team member services for Whole Foods, confirmed in a phone call that the retailer’s seafood processing will stay in Massachusetts.

“We addressed Whole Foods Market’s commitment to buying local and fresh seafood, and I am happy to report that this remains a priority for them,” Romeo Theken said in a statement provided to SeafoodSource. “I have asked them to buy it [seafood] here in Gloucester and my team will continue the conversation about Gloucester Fresh with Whole Foods Market.”

And, while Theken is “disappointed” in Whole Food’s decision to close the Pigeon Cove Seafood Facility, she was “pleased to hear that they are actively addressing the needs of the displaced employees”.

“I learned that all of the employees will be offered employment and training opportunities at Whole Foods Markets in the area [and] all employees are eligible for some type of severance package as well as unemployment benefits,” Romeo Theken said.

MASSACHUSETTS: Herring skip fish count opening day

April 2, 2019 — Apparently river herring are just like humans: They’re not too crazy about the cold, either.

Monday was the annual opening day for counting river herring at the city’s alewife fishway in West Gloucester and the cold, blustery weather tossed a shutout to the disappointment of about a dozen fish counters, including Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken.

No fish for you.

Unlike last year, when a few river herring returning to the fishway from the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Little River actually showed up on opening day, the fish apparently are operating at a more measured pace this season.

The water was a bracing 7 degrees Celsius, or 44.6 degrees Fahrenheit. That was about the same as last year. But the air temperature of 11 degrees Celsius, or about 52 degrees Fahrenheit, and the whipping wind with gusts up to 30 mph provided their own chilling effects.

“This is colder than they like,” said Eric Hutchins, the Gulf of Maine restoration coordinator for NOAA Fisheries. “But we know they’re on their way because the fish are migrating down in southeastern Massachusetts. It’s just a matter of getting the water a few degrees warmer. A few days of 60-degree temperatures and we’ll have fish.”

MASSACHUSETTS: Gloucester looks to up seafood matchmaking

January 28, 2019 — The city continued its outreach to Gloucester seafood businesses on Thursday, hoping to bolster its presence — and the array of fresh Gloucester seafood products — at the upcoming Seafood Expo North America in Boston.

Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken and other city officials met at City Hall with executives from Mortillaro Lobster Inc., Intershell and Cape Seafoods and its North Atlantic and Pacific Seafood subsidiary to expound on the benefits of attending one of the largest seafood shows in the world.

In a sense, the city was preaching to members of the choir. Intershell and Cape Seafoods already have booked their own booths at the show, which is set to run March 17 to 19 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in South Boston.

No research fishery for shrimp this year, either

November 26, 2018 — This winter there will be no Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken and other local northern shrimp lovers trooping down to the dock with buckets to try to buy the cold-water delicacies.

This winter will be no little different from the last four years when local shrimp disappeared from seafood retail shops as the shrimp fishery has been closed.

The shutdown of the New England shrimp industry has been extended to a limited, research-based fishery that helped provide a small amount of shrimp to the public in the past, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission recently decided.

That means Joe Jurek,a Gloucester-based groundfisherman, who held the rarified position as the only Massachusetts fisherman allowed to fish for northern shrimp in the Gulf of Maine, will likely sticking to his specialization in yellow-tail flounder on most fishing days

The regulators have extended the moratorium on northern shrimp fishing until 2021. In some previous years of the moratorium, shrimp trawlers and trappers had been able to bring some of the popular seafood item to market via a program called the “research set aside.”

Besides Jurek, owner and skipper of the 42-foot FV Mystique Lady, last year’s study also included eight trawlers from Maine and one from New Hampshire.

Each participating boat was allowed to shrimp once a week for eight weeks. Each vessel was allowed to catch and sell up to 1,200 pounds of northern shrimp per week at a price to be determined by the market. There was no other compensation.

MASSACHUSETTS: From sea to table: Hotel, restaurants serving Gloucester Fresh seafood

July 23, 2018 — Eric Lorden, the owner of Passports and Machaca restaurants, has been cooking and running restaurants in Gloucester for a quarter century and there’s always been one thing he never quite understood about some of his local culinary peers.

“For 25 years, I’ve been cooking here and I’ve never understood why anyone would cook and serve frozen seafood,” Lorden said Thursday amid a state visit from Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken to welcome Machaca to the Gloucester Fresh restaurant program. “Both of our restaurants try very hard to use only non-chemical products.”

Machaca, newly opened at 14 Rogers St., joined Captain Carlo’s on Harbor Loop and the Beauport Hotel Gloucester on Commercial Street as the newest members of the marketing program designed to raise the profile and availability of locally landed seafood among restaurants and consumers.

As part of the program, the restaurants agree to carry one locally landed seafood item on their regular menu and many choose to carry even more. In return, they receive a distinctive blue Gloucester Fresh placard to display at their establishments to inform their customers of their investment in the local fishing community.

The Gloucester Fresh restaurant program now boasts more than a dozen local restaurants — not counting the 110 Ninety-Nine restaurants that feature Gloucester-landed haddock on its menus — and has begun to imbue its members with a deeper sense of community.

MASSACHUSETTS: Selling state’s seafood: Report says ports like Gloucester must take lead

May 25, 2018 — Massachusetts should increase its public commitment and investment in the state’s commercial fishing industry to help foster innovation and partnerships among diverging stakeholders and the private sector, according to a report commissioned by the Seaport Economic Council.

The report, produced by the Urban Harbor Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston and titled “Building the Massachusetts Seafood System,” also recommended that major Bay State fishing ports such as Gloucester commit to a prominent role in growth and redevelopment of the fishing industry.

“It is at the local level where face-to-face information sharing and institutional support typically lead to new technology and product development, new businesses or non-profit programs and ecosystem restoration projects, and where the benefits of cultural and community development are most directly felt,” the report stated.

Lt. Gov. Karen Polito, the chairwoman of the council, traveled to Gloucester on Thursday — along with former Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk, now deputy secretary of housing and development in the Baker administration — to hear the presentation of the final report at City Hall.

The presentation also drew Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll and Gloucester Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken on the dais and some members of the Gloucester City Council and fishing stakeholders in the audience of about two dozen.

Massachusetts: Seafood expo cut short, still a success

March 14, 2018 — The first casualty of Tuesday’s fierce snowstorm actually came late Monday afternoon, when Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken opted for safety reasons to cut short the city’s presence at the massive Seafood Expo North America at the convention center in South Boston.

“We don’t want any of our people getting hurt trying to come in here to staff our booth or the people coming in to meet with us,” Romeo Theken said even before leaving the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center Monday. “And really, we’ve gotten most of what we wanted to get done.”

Following Monday’s session, the Gloucester contingent, led by Economic Development Director Sal Di Stefano, broke down the city’s booth and hauled everything back to Gloucester.

The third nor’easter of the past fortnight, however, did force the city — again for safety reasons — to cancel its annual Wednesday-after-the-Expo visit to the city by a contingent of largely foreign seafood processors, dealers and fishermen in Boston for the three-day seafood show that features 1,341 exhibitors from 57 countries around the globe. Cumulatively, they occupy 258,360 square feet of exhibition space.

“It’s really for the safety of our guests and out of respect for people who will be involved in snow removal around the city,” Di Stefano said. “The last thing we want to do is put somebody in danger. And you know what? They can always come back.”

The city, he said, made a strong showing in the first two days of the show, capped off Monday by its VIP luncheon tasting that drew 75 into a glassed suite overlooking the sprawling convention floor.
