Andy Mays Honored with Maine DMR Award of Excellence

March 14, 2016 — The following was released by the Maine Department of Marine Resources:

Andy Mays a scalloper and lobster fisherman from Southwest Harbor has received the first annual Maine Department of Marine Resources Award of Excellence. The award, presented by DMR Commissioner Patrick Keliher during the Fishermen’s Forum in Rockport, recognizes industry members who participate with the Department to ensure a sustainable future for Maine’s commercial fisheries. Mays was honored for his long-term service on DMR advisory councils.

“Through his work on DMR advisory councils over the years, Andy has set an exemplary standard of engagement and active participation for industry. As Commissioner I have come to rely on Andy for his informed, colorfully blunt and straightforward opinions and ideas. His advice and input is always a welcome and valuable contribution to the fisheries management process. There is no one more deserving of this first annual award.”

MAINE: Half-billion-dollar lobsterpalooza, but some fishermen worried

March 11, 2016 — ROCKPORT — Maine’s lobster landings put more than a half-billion dollars in lobstermen’s pockets last year, but some fishermen and scientists see clouds on what looks like a sparkling horizon.

Last week, just in time for the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, the Department of Marine Resources released its preliminary 2015 commercial fisheries landings and the news was astonishing.

According to DMR, the value of Maine’s commercially harvested marine resources topped $600 million in overall value in 2015. The total, $631,768,531, was an all-time high and an increase of more than $33 million over the previous record, set in 2014.

The biggest increases came in the state’s lobster fishery, where the total landed value of the catch jumped by more than $37 million and the average boat price received by lobstermen increased by more than 10 percent, from $3.70 per pound in 2014 to $4.09 per pound last year.

At $495,433,635, the overall value of Maine’s lobster fishery set another record. Factoring in bonuses paid to harvesters as reported by 11 of Maine’s 19 lobster co-ops, the overall landed value of Maine’s lobster fishery reached $510,680,048.

While the industry enjoyed a half-billion-dollar lobsterpalooza, some fishermen and lobster scientists saw clouds on the horizon.

Marine Patrol Officer Jeff Turcotte Receives Maine Lobstermen’s Association Marine Patrol Officer of the Year Award

March 6, 2016 — The following was released by the Maine Department of Marine Resources:

Marine Patrol Officer Jeff Turcotte, who serves in the Southwest Harbor Patrol, receives the 2016 Maine Lobstermen’s Association Maine Patrol Officer of the Year Award. The award, presented Saturday night at the Fishermen’s Forum in Rockport, is an annual recognition of Marine Patrol Officers who provide outstanding service in support of the Maine lobster industry.

Warm ocean could mean early boom in 2016 lobster catch

March 3, 2016 — ROCKPORT, Maine (AP) — Maine’s lobster catches will likely peak early this year, which could mean an abundance of cheap lobster for consumers and bad news for the state’s signature industry, a group of scientists reported on Thursday.

Maine’s busy summer lobster fishing season typically picks up around early July, the same time the state’s tourism industry gets in gear. But scientists with the Portland-based Gulf of Maine Research Institute predict this year’s lobster season will get rolling two or three weeks early.

The scientists, who unveiled their findings during the Maine Fishermen’s Forum in Rockport, pinned the early lobster season on warming ocean temperatures. Along Maine’s coast, temperatures are 2 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit higher than normal. That means lobsters are likely to move inshore, shed their shells and become more easily trapped earlier this summer, they said.

An early lobster season can disrupt Maine’s valuable lobster supply chain, which is partially dependent on big July and August catches, and make prices plummet. Prices at the dock fell 16 percent in 2012, a year of early catches, and prices to consumers fell, too. The 2014 haul shattered state value records because of a high-volume catch that arrived on schedule.

MAINE: Questioning our Changing Oceans’ panel discussion at forum

March 1, 2016 — Climate change and its impact on the ocean and the fishing industry is the topic of the March 3 session of the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, the Boothbay Register reported.

Thursday’s session will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

“As a fisherman, I’m seeing things on the water that I have never experienced before, and I have questions about what this means that I can’t easily answer.” Gerry Cushman, a lobsterman out of Port Clyde and board member for the Maine Fishermen’s Forum, told the newspaper. “I spend most of my life on the water so the Maine Fishermen’s Forum is one of the few times, as a fisherman, I have the time to focus on the future of my industry.”
