Over 800 Seafood Industry Members Write to Oppose the Fisheries Provisions of the House Democrats’ Climate Bill

November 16, 2020 — Over 800 participants in our nation’s seafood economy wrote today to Chairman Raúl Grijalva of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources to express deep concern regarding Title II of the Ocean-Based Climate Solutions Act, recently introduced by the committee Democrats. The signers of the letter argue that the bill would undermine our nation’s world-class system of fisheries management, harming fishermen and the coastal communities they sustain. They urged the chairman to fundamentally rethink Title II’s provisions.

Of particular concern is the bill’s mandate that would compel the Executive Branch to establish Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that prohibit all commercial fishing activity across at least 30 percent of the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by 2030.  The proposal is known by the slogan “30 by 30”.

The House Natural Resources Committee plans a hearing tomorrow to cover this bill, among several others.

The letter was organized by the At-sea Processors Association, the National Fisheries Institute, Saving Seafood, and the Seafood Harvesters of America.

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is among the world’s very best fishery managers.  This bill appears to ignore that expertise and process and just walls off parts of the ocean to fishing. It disregards generations of science-based work and community consensus. Drawing arbitrary lines on a map is not science, it’s politics. Lines on a map don’t actually promote sustainability but they can harm livelihoods that depend on real sustainability work.”

FDA beefs up food safety guidelines and announces plans to resume inspections

July 15, 2020 — The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new food safety guidelines include utilizing technology to enhance traceability, responding more quickly to outbreaks, and other factors affecting the seafood industry.

This New Era of Smarter Food Safety blueprint represents a “new approach to food safety, leveraging technology and other tools to create a safer and more digital, traceable food system,” the agency said on its website.

Trump orders removal of barriers to aquaculture

May 11, 2020 — The Trump Administration has issued an executive order Thursday to remove “outdated and unnecessarily burdensome” aquaculture regulations to promote the competitiveness of American seafood.

The Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth acknowledged aquaculture’s contribution to the U.S. economy and in enhancing the quality of American lives.

It calls for the expansion of sustainable U.S. seafood production through more efficient and predictable aquaculture permitting.

“This demonstrates a clear understanding that safe, authorized aquaculture can have a lasting impact that is not only beneficial to the viability of wild capture stocks but to the economic sustainability of the entire seafood community,” said John Connelly, president of the National Fisheries Institute.

NFI Statement on The President’s Executive Order Regarding U.S. Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth

May 7, 2020 — The following was released by the National Fisheries Institute:

Today President Trump highlighted the importance of the U.S. seafood community to America’s economy, heritage, and future. By issuing an Executive Order that recognizes the benefits of American seafood trade and promotes the vital role it plays in the industry’s recovery, he underscored the significance of delicious, high quality U.S. seafood exports.

Continuing work to open essential markets, like the EU to our shellfish or Japan for our Alaska pollock, will help regain the seafood community’s financial footing and grow an industry eager to expand.
 
The President’s order also recognized the importance of enforcing rules that ensure wild caught seafood is legally harvested. Enforcement of such ideas is a shared international responsibility. The U.S. has led the way globally as early adopters of the Port State Measures Agreement, the binding international agreement targeting illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. With today’s order, the White House shows a continued commitment to stamping out practices that disadvantage Americans who legally work the water.
 
What’s more, the order calls for a renewed focus on permitting for U.S. aquaculture facilities that is both effective and efficient. This demonstrates a clear understanding that safe, authorized aquaculture can have a lasting impact that is not only beneficial to the viability of wild capture stocks but to the economic sustainability of the entire seafood community.
 
The U.S. seafood community includes more than 1.7 million men and women and $145 billion in sales. Right now family-owned companies in remote coastal towns and large inland cities that catch, portion, ship and serve seafood are suffering. We applaud the President for acknowledging this important sector and the American workers it supports. We thank him for recognizing the needs identified in today’s order and encourage him to continue to remember the entire seafood value chain, including processors and distributors, during America’s recovery.

Fake-seafood producers are pushing back against laws requiring accurate labeling

March 18, 2020 — Genetically tweaked salmon that grow three times faster than normal fish. Fillets grown in labs from fish cells. Now plant-based seafoods such as “vegan shrimp,” or “Toona,” are gaining footholds in the marketplace – and confusing customers.

A new study by FoodMinds for the National Fisheries Institute showed that about 40 percent of consumers believed plant-based imitations contain actual seafood. Up to 60 percent thought the products had similar nutritional content as real fish. Still, fake-seafood producers are pushing back against more accurate labeling, claiming without any evidence that customers know what they are getting.

“We have to ensure that the labels are educating people about something as simple as what’s in the package. A lot of these plant-based alternative makers have even suggested that they have the ‘first amendment right’ to call their products whatever they want. And that’s simply not the case,” said Gavin Gibbons, NFI vice president for communications.

NFI, SIRF partner on seafood blockchain pilot with IBM

June 12, 2019 — The National Fisheries Institute (NFI), with financial support from the Seafood Industry Research Fund (SIRF), announced 11 June it is partnering with IBM’s Food Trust to create a blockchain-based seafood supply chain traceability program.

NFI is the largest U.S. seafood industry trade group. IBM’s Food Trust is a blockchain-based system that creates a shared record of food data, and that system will introduced to NFI members. Members – including harvesters, importers, processers, cold storage, foodservice restaurants, and retailers – are all involved with the program.

“We are excited that NFI and the real seafood value-chain will test IBM’s technology,” NFI President John Connelly said.  “NFI members’ supply chains are dynamic and wide-reaching, a fertile ground for this type of pilot.”

Americans eating a lot more seafood, according to NFI’s new Top 10 list

December 14, 2018 — Americans ate over a pound more seafood per capita in 2017 than they did the year before, according to the latest figures shared in the National Fisheries Institute’s (NFI) annual list of the top 10 most consumed seafood species in the United States.

In 2017, Americans consumed 16 pounds of seafood per capita, an increase of 1.1 pounds from 2016 – a considerable hike, said NFI President John Connelly.

“More than a pound increase is substantial,” Connelly said in a prepared statement.

The pound-plus increase wasn’t the only eye-opening figure presented in this year’s list, either, Connelly noted. The new numbers suggest that seafood consumption in the United States may be diversifying beyond the usual suspects, he said.

Atlantic Capes Fisheries Founder Danny Cohen Passes Away After Battle With Cancer

November 23, 2018 — SEAFOOD NEWS — Danny Cohen, the founder and CEO of Atlantic Capes Fisheries, passed away on Tuesday after battling cancer. He was 63-years-old.

Cohen started Atlantic Capes Fisheries after taking over a small fishing dock and several fishing boats that his father, Joseph Cohen, left to him. Over the years he served as Chairman of the National Fisheries Institute Scientific Monitoring Committee, and was a member of the NFI Clam Committee. He also worked with Rutgers University and founded Cape May Salt Oyster Company, “re-vitalizing the Delaware Bay oyster industry by growing disease resistant shellfish.”

National Fisheries Institute president John Connelly released the following statement on Cohen’s passing:

Danny Cohen, founder of Atlantic Capes Fisheries, Inc. was uniquely committed to both the sustainability of the resource and the sustainability of his employees.

Danny was influential in organizing efforts to promote the sustainable harvest of clams, scallops, and other seafood. He took a long-term view of the fisheries and encouraged a balance between industry and environment that would prove an instrumental equilibrium for crew, vessels, and the fish.

Even as Atlantic Capes grew to a multi-species company with dozens of boats, a fleet of trucks and hundreds of employees, his strategy and steady leadership remained the same.

Danny is remembered for serving as Chairman of the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) Scientific Monitoring Committee and on the NFI Clam Committee.

His foresight, innovation, commitment, and his unforgettable laugh, will be missed.

Cohen is survived by his daughter Dorit, his sister Maxi, brother Barry and sister-in-law Ronnie, and his companion Sharon. A funeral will be held Sunday, November 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Shirat HaYam in Ventnor, NJ. Shiva will follow at Barry and Ronnie Cohen’s home in Linwood, NJ.

NFI president: American jobs are fueled by international trade in seafood

September 13, 2018 — The US’ National Fisheries Institute (NFI) has joined ‘Americans for Free Trade’, a multi-industry coalition aimed at opposing tariffs and highlighting the benefits of international trade.

Over 80 US trade associations representing thousands of businesses and workers announced the formation of the group, which will immediately join Farmers for Free Trade, the coalition backed by the nation’s largest ag commodity groups, in a multi-million dollar national campaign called Tariffs Hurt the Heartland.

The campaign will focus on telling the stories of the American businesses, farmers, workers and families harmed by tariffs through town-hall style events, grassroots outreach to Congress and the administration, social media, rapid response and digital advertising.

The campaign includes a geographically searchable map (TariffsHurt.com) that allows users to find stories of job losses, deferred investments, higher prices and other negative consequences for farmers and businesses in communities across the country impacted by tariffs.

National Fisheries Institute joins US business-backed campaign against tariffs

September 13, 2018 — The National Fisheries Institute has joined around 80 other U.S. trade associations in a coordinated campaign to oppose tariffs and other barriers to free trade.

The multi-industry coalition, Americans for Free Trade, on Wedneday, 12 September, launched a multi-million dollar national campaign titled Tariffs Hurt the Heartland. The campaign is aimed at members of the U.S. Congress and the general public and will tell stories of American businesses, farmers, workers, and families being hurt by the recently imposed tariffs. It will include events in congressional districts across the country; paid television, radio, and online advertisements; a “rapid-response war room” that will fact check and respond to tariff announcements; a digital and traditional media campaign including op-eds, blogs, and press statements on tariff-related issues; and direct outreach to key members of Congress “on behalf of grassroots voices from across the nation,” according to the newly-formed organization.

“American jobs are fueled by international trade in seafood,” NFI President John Connelly said in a press release. “Without access to seafood imports from important markets like China, or if these products become too expensive, jobs here in the U.S. will pay the price.”

Partners in the campaign include the National Retail Federation, Farmers for Free Trade, Retail Industry Leaders, the Consumer Technology Association, the American Apparel and Footwear Association, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
