The newest addition to the city's fishing fleet arrived in New Bedford Harbor on Monday.
The brand new 90-footer Growler, which cost $3 million, belongs to Fleet Fisheries and is named Growler after its owner's nickname, Lars Vinjerud.
The steel vessel, built by Williams Fabrication in Coden, Ala., unloaded a catch of tuna, swordfish and lobster at the South Terminal and will remain in the area for the summer. The boat was designed as a combination longliner and scalloper, according to Paul Lane, shore captain.
"When scalloping, it will work as a one-dredge limited access boat and it will go longlining the rest of the year," he said. "Setting it up to work two fisheries means you're getting more bang for your buck."
