About Us

Saving Seafood is a 501(c)(6) association organized as a non-profit corporation funded by the fishing industry.

Saving Seafood conducts media and public outreach on behalf of the seafood industry, as well as communications to keep industry members aware of issues and events of concern.

Saving Seafood works with owners, captains, fishermen, seafood processors and brokers of the eastern United States who are committed to the preservation of the resource that has provided their livelihood, and that of their American forebears, for generations.

Saving Seafood is committed to:

-Working closely with scholars to develop and disseminate quality scientific information

-Communicating with media and the public on matters of interest to the industry

-Fostering cooperation and communication among members of the fishing community

-Cooperating with lawmakers to implement the stated intent of our fisheries management law that requires “taking into account the social and economic needs of the States.” [Magnuson-Stevens Act (2)(b)(5), Public Law 101-627]

Our History:

An analysis conducted in the Fall of 2008 revealed that the fisheries and seafood companies in the northeast had not only a need for greater media coverage and public awareness, but also a need for more information about events concerning the industry.

With primary financial support from the Whaling City (New Bedford) and Boston Seafood Display Auctions, the Saving Seafood website was launched in February of 2009, to provide a central source of current information, daily e-mail news updates, and breaking news alerts.

In the summer of 2009, Agger Fish of New York joined the Auctions in backing the effort.   Northern Wind and Tempest Fisheries became sponsors early in 2010, and late in 2010, the Board of Directors of the Northeast Seafood Coalition voted to support Saving Seafood.

Our Efforts:

Saving Seafood worked with the Fisheries Survival Fund and elected officials to make the successful argument that the New England Fisheries Management Council should reverse an earlier decision and increase allowed effort levels for the scallop industry.

Saving Seafood provided outreach support for the 2009 and 2010 floating protests at Martha’s Vineyard during President Obama’s summer vacation.

Saving Seafood worked with affected industry members, journalists, and elected officials to expose abuses in NOAA Fisheries Enforcement, to expose inappropriate actions such as document shredding while under investigation, and to argue that past cases where abuse took place should be re-examined.

Saving Seafood worked with Members of Congress to publicize the need to create level playing field for U.S. negotiators who work with our Canadian counterparts through the International Fisheries Agreement Clarification Act sponsored by Congressman Barney Frank and Senator Olympia Snowe

Saving Seafood worked with the Cities of New Bedford and Gloucester to publicize the reasons for their lawsuit against NOAA and the Commerce Department

Saving Seafood has worked to gain solid coverage on fisheries issues from local, national, and international news outlets including the Associated Press, CBS Evening News, The Economist, and U.S. News and World Report.
