CALIFORNIA: Port of Hueneme makes historic announcement during World Ocean Day celebration

June 12, 2024 — Holly Lohuis has made it her mission to tell students the importance of protecting the ocean for future generations.

Part of that conservation conversation includes protecting endangered whales.

The Port of Hueneme and Oxnard Harbor District vowed to make all operations at the Port Of Hueneme zero emissions within the next 6 years— a change that will not only help save marine life and preserve ecosystems, but will also improve public health.

“We want clean air for our community. We want the workers working at the docks to breathe clean air. We want them to have quiet equipment to ensure the best public safety for the workforce on the waterfront,” said Port of Hueneme CEO and Port Director Kristin Decas.

World Ocean Day surveys reveal sustainability a big concern for seafood consumers

June 8, 2023 — A number of organizations released new data on the 15th annual World Ocean Day on 8 June that highlights consumer desire for greater ocean protection.

A new poll conducted by Morning Consult for the Walton Family Foundation targeted U.S. consumers, and found the majority of Americans think ocean health is important.

Study identifies major barriers to financing a sustainable ocean economy

June 9, 2021 — Financing a sustainable global ocean economy may require a Paris Agreement-type effort, according to a new report from an international team of researchers led by the University of British Columbia.

That’s because a significant increase in sustainable ocean finance will be required to ensure a sustainable ocean economy that benefits society and businesses in both developing and developed countries.

The report, published today—on World Ocean Day—identifies major barriers to financing such a sustainable ocean economy. This includes all ocean-based industries, like seafood production, shipping and renewable energy, and ecosystem goods and services, such as climate regulation and coastal protection.

“The size of the ocean economy was estimated at around $1.5 trillion in 2010, and prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, was projected to increase to $3 trillion in 2030,” said lead author Dr. Rashid Sumaila, a professor at UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and Canada Research Chair in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics.
