No immediate disruptions reported from port strike as trade unions pressure Biden to take action

October 3, 2024 — The International Longshoreman’s Association East and Gulf Coast port strike has entered its third day, and while the rhetoric is heating up, there have been few supply chain disruptions reported so far. 

Despite few disruptions pressure is mounting from trade groups for President Biden to use his legal powers to end the strike, especially since the damage from Hurricane Helene has left North Carolina in need of aid supplies.

112 retailers, tuna suppliers urge WCPFC to adopt tuna harvest strategies

November 17, 2021 — More than one hundred companies in the tuna supply chain have sent a letter to the heads of delegations of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), urging them to develop and adopt harvest strategies across all the tuna stocks the regional fishery management organization oversees.

Walmart, Whole Foods, Costco, Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Target, and Kroger were among the signors of the letter, which said harvest control strategies are necessary to ensure the RFMO’s tuna fisheries retain their Marine Stewardship Council certifications.

Environmental NGOs, fishing companies split on health of Antarctic krill fishery

November 15, 2021 — The recent meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) heightened divisions between commercial krill-fishing companies and environmental non-governmental organizations claiming the Antarctic krill population is facing an existential threat.

Oslo, Norway-based Aker Biomarine, the world’s largest krill-fishing and -processing company, said the CCAMLR meeting resulted in the continuance of sustainable management practices for the fishery, pointing to a one-year extension of a krill-conservation instrument, CM 51-07, to allow more time to finalize a comprehensive krill-management strategy.

Chinese vessels accused by EJF of IUU fishing, labor transgressions in Somali waters

November 2, 2021 — A new investigation has exposed how China is defying international law to carry out illegal fishing operations in Somali water, while subjecting foreign crew to mistreatment.

A new Environmental Justice Foundation report claims six Chinese fishing vessels entered Somali waters without permission and used prohibited fishing gear, such as trawl nets, in fishing zones that have been reserved for Somali fishing communities.

UK-France tensions escalate over post-Brexit fishing rights

November 2, 2021 — Tensions have flared again in an ongoing dispute between France and the United Kingdom over post-Brexit fishing rights.

On Monday, 1 November, French President Emmanuel Macron postponed trade sanctions that would have blocked British fishermen from French ports beginning on 2 November, to allow negotiators from both sides to work on new proposals to defuse the dispute. Macron also delayed the implementation of a “go slow” order at border checks for incoming shipments from the U.K., and temporarily backed off threats to cut energy supplies to the Channel Island of Jersey, which is controlled by the U.K. Macron said he called for the delay in order to allow negotiators from both sides to work on new proposals to defuse the dispute.

Seafood2030 hosting virtual sustainability forum in September

July 20, 2020 — Seafood2030 and SeafoodSource will be hosting a virtual event on 9 and 10 September highlighting the evolving relationship between the seafood industry and governments on the sustainability front.

The Seafood2030 Virtual Sustainability Forum will look at real-world examples where better alignment of industry and government efforts can improve the sustainability, social impacts, and economic viability of fisheries, event organizers said. It will also focus on identifying opportunities to better align sustainability efforts “to improve the global management of seafood and seafood supply-chains.”
