New Jersey rallies against flounder harvest cuts

January 27, 2017 — POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ – The state’s fishing industry could  be crippled unless proposed federal regulations that would cut the harvest of summer flounder — the state’s No. 1  fish — by almost half are stopped, advocates warned at a protest rally held at the commercial fishing docks.

“It’s an attack on our economy, it’s an attack on our way of life,”  said Bob Martin, head of the state Department of Environmental Protection, who organized the rally to bring attention to the looming regulations that he warned would devastate the state’s fishing industry, particularly the recreational fishing boats that are a mainstay of the summer tourism season. .

“You can barely stay in business as it is. If they shove a 19-inch size limit in our face, then we’re done,” said Captain Will Hammarstrom, owner of the Carolyn Ann III, one of only two party boats left in Barnegat Light.

There’s no cod from Cape Cod in local markets

August 1, 2015 — EASTHAM, MA —  Step out of the hot, sunny day into the cool, fresh-smelling interior of Mac’s Seafood in Eastham and you’ll find a showcase full of glistening fish and shellfish nestled in a thick bed of ice chips.

Bluefish, summer flounder, cod and striped bass fillets, bluefin tuna, halibut and swordfish steaks, monkfish tails, bright pink slabs of salmon, shucked Atlantic sea scallops and whole squid, plus clams, oysters and mussels in their shells. There are plenty of choices.

But company co-owner Alex Hay doesn’t hesitate to say that his customers won’t find Cape Cod codfish in his fish market – or in any other fish market in the area.

Cod has slipped almost entirely out of reach for local fishermen over the last decade as stocks have contracted due to overfishing and environmental changes and quotas have been reduced to near nothing.

Atlantic Fishermen Frustrated by New Regulations

July 20, 2015 — The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is collecting feedback from dozens of fishing areas from Florida up to North Carolina about the snapper-grouper fishery.

At a public hearing at the Murrells Inlet Community Center Monday night, local fishermen spoke out against the proposed regulations.

A number of local commercial and some recreational fishermen said this council’s proposals are like Big Brother on the fishing industry.

They said fishermen should just be left alone to fish.

“We want some controversial items that are opposed by nearly all fishermen removed, like catch shares, which is an effort to privatize the fishery, electronic monitoring of a vessel, and more closed fishing areas,” said Tom Swatzel, a council member with Sustainable Fishing.  “We just don’t need those at this time.”

The Vision Project which was initially launched last year by SAFMC was blasted by local fishermen Monday night.
