MASSACHUSETTS: Dinner aims to promote Gloucester’s catch

August 18, 2016 — GLOUCESTER, Mass. — The seafood bounty that springs from the Atlantic Ocean waters around Gloucester will be the centerpiece of the “Sea to Supper” community dinner to benefit the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association.

The dinner, with a menu created by Relish Catering and Events of Manchester, is scheduled to run from 6 to 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 in the waterfront pavilion tent at the Mile Market One restaurant at Cape Ann’s Marina Resort off Essex Avenue. It will highlight some of the underutilized and plentiful seafood species landed in Gloucester, such as whiting, dabs, redfish and butterfish.

The event is designed beyond solely a culinary experience, according to the organizers that include Fishing Partnership Support Services, the city of Gloucester, Mile Marker One and the Gloucester Arts and Culture Initiative. There will be discussions on how to create markets for the underutilized species and methods for reintegrating them into the commercial fishing industry’s local landings.

More work to be done for Seafood Hall of Famer

August 11, 2016 — Angela Sanfilippo, who comes from seven generations of commercial fishermen and is a tireless advocate for fishermen in Gloucester and throughout Massachusetts, says fishing is “in her blood.”

“I grew up near the water, in a little village in Sicily [Italy]. Fishing was the whole town’s [livelihood],” Sanfilippo said.

Sanfilippo, 66, has come a long way since then. At the Boston Seafood Festival on 7 August, the Boston Fisheries Foundation announced that it was inducting Sanfilippo into the Boston Seafood Hall of Fame because of her work as a “tireless protector of the oceans and the fishing communities” in Gloucester and other areas.

Sanfilippo has served as president of the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association (GFWA) for 39 years, and is also executive director of the Massachusetts Fishermen’s Partnership and director of Support Services for the Fishing Partnership Support Services Organization. She also serves as a board member for several commercial fishing organizations.

One of Sanfilippo’s many accomplishments was getting Stellwagen Bank to be declared a Marine Sanctuary.

“She taught that marine sanctuaries can still be an active fishing area, within a specific rule set, as opposed to being a museum where you can look but not touch,” said Richard Stavis, CEO of Stavis Seafoods in Boston. “It really opened people’s eyes to the value of a marine sanctuary.”

Sanfilippo also worked tirelessly to stop oil drilling on Georges Bank, as well as ocean dumping and sand and gravel mining on Stellwagen Bank.

Fifth Annual Boston Seafood Festival Draws Thousands, Features New England Fishermen’s Panel

August 9, 2016 — SEAFOOD NEWS — The fifth annual Boston Seafood Festival was held over the weekend at the Boston Fish Pier. The event is hosted by the Boston Fisheries Foundation, whose membership includes major Boston seafood operators Stavis Seafood and John Nagle Co among others.

The festival has grown into a successful annual event since its founding. Thousands of attendees are drawn to the event that features a Blessing of the Fleet, oyster shucking contest, lobster bake, beer garden and seafood cooking demos led by well-known chefs from popular restaurants around Boston.

Unique to the festival this year was a panel discussion with some notable New England fishermen. Stavis Seafoods CEO Richard Stavis moderated the panel that included Gloucester-based fishermen Joe Orlando and Al Cottone along with Rob Martin from Boston’s South Shore.

The panel highlighted the current issues faced by New England’s fishing industry and what steps need to taken to improve the industry.

The festival also inducted Angela Sanfilippo,  the president of the  Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association, into the Boston Seafood Hall of Fame.

New manual outlines steps for fishermen, communities to take in crisis

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (March 25, 2016) — The concept first began to crystallize in Angela Sanfilippo’s mind about four years ago, when the president of the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association realized she needed to start putting some things down on paper.

Sanfilippo, both in her roles with fishing-based community groups and her own experience as a wife, daughter and sister of fishermen, had helped develop a series of protocols to help fishermen avoid calamities on the water and help the Gloucester fishing community deal with fishing tragedies when they occur.

“I just thought that we should start putting these things in writing because we’re not going to be around forever,” Sanfilippo said.

Thus was born the idea that burst into reality Thursday when the Fishing Partnership Support Services unveiled its RESCUES manual in an event at the U.S. Coast Guard’s Station Gloucester.

The title of the manual, assembled with assistance from staffers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Sea Grant College program and Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, is an acronym for “Responding to Emergencies at Sea and to Communities Under Extreme Stress.”

MASSACHUSETTS: A win for Gloucester Fresh

February 24, 2016 — For former Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk, it was a rare home game in her role as the executive secretary of the state’s Seaport Economic Council. For the city, it was another step forward in its efforts to brand and market its seafood and seafood businesses.

The Seaport Economic Council and its chairwoman, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, rolled into Gloucester on Tuesday morning, meeting for more than two hours at the Tavern on the Harbor and awarding 10 state grants worth $5.15 million to 10 Massachusetts entities — including $151,000 to the city’s Gloucester Fresh Seafood Innovation Program.

The Gloucester grant, according to city Economic Development Director Sal Di Stefano, will help the city expand its campaign to promote its seafood harvest locally, regionally and nationally. That expansion includes the nine-day rental of two digital billboards along Route 1 in advance of the city’s participation in the annual Seafood Expo North America in Boston during the first week of March.

Di Stefano said the billboards alone are expected to convey the city’s branding message to at least 400,000 commuters during the city’s run on them.

He said the grant money also will be used to defray the city’s overall costs of participating in the Seafood Expo North America show and the Boston Seafood Festival in each of the next two years.

Gloucester, Mass. investment in seafood expo is money well spent

February 3, 2016 — Of all the initiatives begun last year by then-interim Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, the return of the city to the international Seafood Expo North America in Boston was a no-brainer, given Theken’s deep ties to the Gloucester Fishermen’s Wives Association.

By all accounts, the endeavor was a success. The city’s booth stood out amid a sea of sterile, cardboard convention center displays, thanks to the presence of the mayor and Angela Sanfilippo, president of the Fishermen’s Wives, and a bubbling, aromatic pot of redfish soup. That end product — the food people actually put in their mouths — is as emblematic of the Gloucester fishing industry as its hard-working fleet or the Man at the Wheel. Gloucester fishes so people can eat. What better way to bring home the point than with 40 steaming gallons of fish stew?

The end result was an increased awareness of the Gloucester brand, and a series of meetings among city officials, waterfront businesses and potential clients from the United States and abroad. It’s exactly the kind of result one would hope for from a long weekend’s attendance at a trade expo.

Last year’s expo, in fact, is still paying off: On the Monday of this year’s event, the city will play host to potential buyers and trade representatives from more than a dozen countries, including Canada, Turkey, Mexico, Iceland, Taiwan, Morocco, Spain, Indonesia and the Netherlands. Those are real contacts.
