MASSACHUSETTS: Fishing Heritage Center presenting an evening of stories and verse from Down East Maine

March 30, 2017 — The public is invited to what organizers promise is sure to be an entertaining evening with Brian Robbins and Bob Quinn.

Bob Quinn grew up lobstering and fishing with his father and uncle, learning seamanship aboard the herring pumper Beryl.

Quinn has been steeped in the lore of coastal Maine since he was a child. His Uncle Bonney wrote nautical poems with a humorous bent and it is his recitations of these poems, along with his colorful commentary, for which he is best known. Quinn eventually moved to Eagle Island and assumed the caretaking of the family homestead. He has recorded two dozen of his uncle’s poems, and spends many evenings regaling neighbors and guests at the farmhouse with Uncle Bonney’s poems and his own salty stories.

MASSACHUSETTS: A day in the life of a scallop boat captain

January 23, 2017 — NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — “We’re really pleased to see such a great turnout,” Fishing Heritage Center Director Laura Orleans told the standing-room-only crowd filling the center on Jan. 11. The capacity audience was there to hear Fairhaven scallop boat captain Chris Wright talk about “A Day in the Life” of the master of not one but two local 200-foot scallopers.

Pleased, but not surprised at the big turnout. “It’s no surprise because Chris Wright is one of my favorite captains,” Orleans said. By the end of the interesting lecture on his life at sea, and a spirited question-and-answer session, Wright was the favorite scallop boat captain of everyone in the room. 

“Don’t be in awe of us” braving fierce winds and mountainous waves far offshore, Wright suggested modestly at one point in the question-and-answer period. “It’s just what we do.”

What Wright does is skipper the Huntress out of Fairhaven, and the Nordic Pride, based in New Bedford. A shared captain is not uncommon these days, with each scallop boat limited by fishing regulations to a maximum of 75 days at sea, he noted.

“I’m getting ready for my 29th year as a captain,” Wright said, looking back on a life at sea that started with summer and vacation work on his father’s fishing boat as a youth, and through college. He graduated from a maritime academy in 1983, and spent a year working on commercial vessels, traveling far and wide over the oceans.

“But it was too much time away from home,” he suggested. “After a while, I went back home and started fishing.” 

He said he is lucky to have found two good boat owners to work for, and build long-term relationships with over the decades. He alternates trips on the two vessels, helming each for 10 or more trips per year with the same crew.

A captain spends much of his time on shore preparing for the next trip, with each fishing voyage lasting from 10 to 14 days. If the maximum catch allowed for that trip is 17,000 pounds of scallops, the boats generally stay out as long as is needed to get close to the allowed harvest.

MASSACHUSETTS: Fishing Heritage Center Launches Exhibit Series

November 14, 2016 — The following was released by the Fishing Heritage Center:

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Fishing Heritage Center is pleased to announce the opening of New England Fishermen: The Photography of Markham Starr, the first in a series of changing exhibits.  An opening reception will take place on Friday, November 18th at 8 p.m. The Center is wheelchair accessible and located at 38 Bethel Street in New Bedford. Parking is available in the lot adjacent to the Center.  This first exhibit will be on display through January 17th.

The commercial fishing industry in New England has long been an economic mainstay of the region, but has struggled for its very survival over the past two decades. Fearing the loss of yet another traditional working culture, Markham Starr began going to sea to photograph commercial fishermen from ports such as Point Judith, Rhode Island, New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Corea, Maine. His black and white images attempt to place today’s fishermen within the context of the long history of commercial fishing in New England, and preserve something of this important working culture for future generations.

Starr’s work has been translated into a dozen books and has been featured in magazines such as LensWork, The Sun, Vermont Magazine, and Rhode Island Monthly, and won a 2013 national magazine award for the best photographic essay for Yankee Magazine. The photographs from his major projects have been selected for inclusion in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress.

MASSACHUSETTS: Salted, Pickled & Smoked: an exhibit of fishing community artifacts to open on Thursday, November 10th

November 1, 2016 — The following was released by the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center:

New Bedford, MA – The Fishing Heritage Center is pleased to announce the opening of Salted, Pickled & Smoked: Preserving the Cultural Heritage of new Bedford’s Fishing Community, an exhibit of fishing community artifacts.

Co-curated by FHC Executive Director Laura Orleans and New Bedford Free Public Library Art Curator Janice Hodson, the exhibit will be on display on the 3rd floor of the New Bedford Free Public Library (613 Pleasant Street) from November 10, 2016 through January 7, 2017.  An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, November 10th from 6-8 p.m.  Maritime Anthropologist Madeleine Hall-Arber will present a short talk about the project at 7 p.m. that evening.

The Fishing Heritage Center has been busy digitizing photographs and artifacts from the local fishing community as part of a year-long project.   Salted, Pickled, & Smoked: Preserving the Cultural Heritage of New Bedford’s Fishing Community is an exhibit highlighting some of the most interesting photographs, documents, objects, and stories that have been shared.

The project is a collaboration involving the New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center, University Archives and Special Collections at the University of Massachusetts Boston, Clair T. Carney Library at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, MIT Sea Grant, the New Bedford Free Public Library, and New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. The project is funded by a Common Heritage grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

MASSACHUSETTS: Learn first hand about the fishing industry

October 25th, 2016 — The following was released by the Fishing Heritage Center: 

The Fishing Heritage Center is pleased to announce the launch of “A Day in the Life” a speaker series about all aspects of the fishing industry. The first program will take place on Wednesday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m.  Programs are presented free of charge for members and volunteers, there is a $5 fee for the general public. The Center is wheelchair accessible and located at 38 Bethel Street in New Bedford’s historic downtown.  Free off street parking is available. 

At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, veteran fisherman Rodney Avila will talk about the groundfishing industry.  Rodney has spent over 50 years working in the fishing industry. He began fishing at the age of nine. He was the fourth generation in his family to fish out of New Bedford.  He fished offshore for swordfish, tuna, and groundfish for 47 years before taking work on shore as the director of the Fishermen’s Family Assistance Center. He now works as a marine safety instructor, teaching other fishermen the skills they need to be safe at sea. In 2007 he received the National Fisherman Highliner award. Today, Rodney’s son and five of his grandsons continue to earn their living as commercial fishermen.  Rodney will talk about the fishery, the gear, and daily life at sea, providing a rare firsthand look at the work and life of a fisherman.

Support groups tout new safety manual at New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center

May 16, 2016 — NEW BEDFORD — J.J. Bartlett, president of Fishing Partnership Support Services, said the most dangerous job in America isn’t firefighting or police work.

It’s commercial fishing, Bartlett claimed Tuesday at the new Fishing Heritage Center downtown. Bartlett said groundfishermen in the northeastern U.S. work in the most dangerous waters in the country — more hazardous than Alaska — and, from 2000 to 2009, were 37 times more likely to die on the job than police officers.

He said that figure came from a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and workforce data from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Bartlett’s comments came at an event announcing the release of RESCUES — Responding to Emergencies at Sea and Communities Under Extreme Stress — a new safety and resources manual created by Fishing Partnership Support Services, the Massachusetts Fishermen’s Partnership and other collaborators.

Madeleine Hall-Arber, an anthropologist with MIT’s Sea Grant College Program, is one of the manual’s authors. The MIT program funded the manual’s printing. Hall-Arber said at the Heritage Center that collaborators’ intent is to distribute the free manual to fishing boats and fishermen’s families across the region.

MASSACHUSETTS: FISH FRY FUNDRAISER IN NEW BEDFORD ON FRIDAY BENEFITS FISHING HERITAGE CENTER

July 14, 2015 — As was the norm in Roman Catholic households, my family observed the “fish for Friday” rule when I was a youngster.

Sometimes this meant tuna salad rolls (or hot creamed tuna, yuck!) and cream of tomato soup. More often, it meant a stint at the deep fryer for my Mom, who cranked out fish and chips for our family of seven (eight if my grandmother was joining us).

Nowadays, a public fish fry tends to be a Lenten event — but it certainly can’t be considered a sacrifice to eat a seafood meal, considering the cost of a pound of haddock.

The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center is hosting a fish fry fundraiser this Friday at Cotali Mar Restaurant. The event, from 6 to 11 p.m., will feature fish and chips with coleslaw, with fillets donated by Bergie’s Seafood and prepared by the restaurant’s chefs. In addition, “Blount Fine Foods is donating chowder,” said Laura Orleans, executive director of the center.

Live music will be provided by Richie Canastra (who owns the Whaling City Seafood Display Auction with his brother Ray) and Paul Savoie. The event will include a cash bar, and silent and live auctions, with Canastra doing the honors as auctioneer, Orleans said. Weather permitting, the event will be held on the patio at the back of the restaurant at 1178 Acushnet Ave., she added.
