August 1, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order on 31 July codifying a new swath of tariffs on dozens of countries.
The order comes as an 1 August deadline, set after Trump threatened increased tariffs before pausing their implementation days later, passes. The new order further modifies tariff rates and implements a range of different tariffs on 69 countries and the European Union as a whole.
July 28, 2025 — The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump announced it has reached a trade deal with the European Union, setting a base tariff rate of 15 percent on E.U. goods.
Trump announced the deal just days before a 1 August deadline that would have seen the E.U.’s effective tariff rate jump to 30 percent. It also came as media reported E.U. diplomats were considering using wide-ranging “anti-coercion” measures, often dubbed the “nuclear option,” as a means of discouraging the tariffs.
June 10, 2025 — The European Union recently unveiled the Ocean Pact – a comprehensive strategy it said is intended to protect the ocean and promote a thriving blue economy.
The newly unveiled strategy fulfills a promise made by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who pledged to create the strategy in July 2024. The European Ocean Pact was officially adopted on 5 June, and von der Leyen unveiled the new strategy at the start of the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, which is running from 9 June through 13 June.
May 29, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump has delayed implementation of a 50 percent tariff on goods from the European Union to 9 July, after first announcing they would go into effect 1 June.
Following a 25 May call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Trump announced he would be pushing back the date. When questioned by a reporter 28 May, the president said the initial threat was needed to bring Europe to the negotiating table.
March 12, 2025 — The seafood industry has so far mostly avoided tariffs on imports amid the global trade war started by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump imposed 25 percent tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from all countries with no exemption starting 12 March, and the European Union and Canada immediately retaliated with new tariffs of their own. Trump claimed the tariffs are being imposed as imports of steel and aluminum pose a “national security threat.”
August 5, 2024 — The European Union is reportedly considering new sanctions against seafood of Russian origin as the divide between the bloc and the country grows.
German publication Die Welt reported the E.U. is considering new sanctions against Russian seafood, including Russian pollock. The E.U. already banned a number of Russian seafood items in a sanctions package in 2022, including items like crustaceans and caviar, but pollock was still allowed.
March 9, 2024 — For the ninth straight month, Earth has obliterated global heat records — with February, the winter as a whole and the world’s oceans setting new high-temperature marks, according to the European Union climate agency Copernicus.
The latest record-breaking in this climate change-fueled global hot streak includes sea surface temperatures that weren’t just the hottest for February, but eclipsed any month on record, soaring past August 2023’s mark and still rising at the end of the month. And February, as well the previous two winter months, soared well past the internationally set threshold for long-term warming, Copernicus reported Wednesday.
The last month that didn’t set a record for hottest month was in May 2023 and that was a close third to 2020 and 2016. Copernicus records have fallen regularly from June on.
February 2024 averaged 13.54 degrees Celsius (56.37 degrees Fahrenheit), breaking the old record from 2016 by about an eighth of a degree. February was 1.77 degrees Celsius (3.19 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the late 19th century, Copernicus calculated. Only last December was more above pre-industrial levels for the month than February was.

December 22, 2022 — The U.K. fishing industry has secured an additional 140,000 metric tons (MT) of fishing opportunities worth GBP 282 million (USD 341.8 million, EUR 326.4 million) for 2023 through a fisheries accord reached with the European Union.
The U.K. and E.U. reached an agreement on catch levels for 69 fish stocks, including some of the most commercially-valuable stocks to the U.K. fishing industry, such as North Sea nephrops, worth GBP 54 million (USD 65.5 million, EUR 62.5 million); anglerfish, worth GBP 31 million (USD 37.6 million, EUR 35.9 million); and western hake, worth GBP 25 million (USD 30.3 million, EUR 28.9 million).
July 7, 2022 — The European Parliament will provide financial help to European Union fisheries and aquaculture sectors struggling with the economic consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including giving compensation to those who have had to stop operating or whose economic viability is threatened.
On Wednesday, 6 July, 2022, Members of European Parliament (MEPs) adopted a measure to support fishers who have had to cease their activities due to the war in Ukraine as well as producers and fishing and aquaculture operators whose activities have been disrupted as a consequence of the conflict.

May 23, 2022 — Soaring demand for fishery and aquaculture products has positioned seafood as the most globally traded animal protein, with a trade value of USD 164 billion (EUR 155.8 billion) in 2021, increasing by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 2.4 percent in the 10-year period 2011-2021, according to the latest seafood trade map and report compiled by Rabobank.
The “2021 World Seafood Map” found that close to half of last year’s trade flowed to the European Union, the United States, and China, whose combined imports surpassed USD 80 billion (EUR 76 billion). According to the analysis, the seafood trade was roughly 3.6 times the size of beef trade (the second most traded animal protein) in 2021, five times the size of the global pork trade, and eight times that of the poultry trade. It also confirmed that there were more than 55 trade flows each valued over USD 400 million (EUR 380 million) a year, and an additional 19 trade flows valued between USD 200 million and USD 400 million (EUR 190 million and EUR 380 million) each.
