Six New England Lawmakers Ask Commerce Department for Emergency Assesment of Gulf of Maine Cod |

WASHINGTON - Dec 16, 2011 -- Six New England lawmakers joined Congressman Barney Frank in asking Commerce Secretary John Bryson for an emergency assessment of Gulf of Maine cod.
John Tierney, Frank Guinta, Bill Keating, Michael Michaud, and Chellie Pingree joined Congressman Barney Frank in writing to Commerce Secretary John Bryson to ask that the National Marine Fisheries Service conduct an emergency assessment of Gulf of Maine cod, and that the secretary exercise his emergency powers to freeze the Gulf of Maine cod allocation until a new stock assessment has been completed. May 22, 2012 - Listening to the New England Council's Groundfish Advisory Panel talk about how that industry is going to pay for monitoring costs is kind of like trying to figure out how to pay your bills when you've just lost your job. Though monitoring is important keeping costs down is critical. As Panel Member Gary Libby pointed out, "If we had 100 percent monitoring we probably wouldn't have an industry."
