Fishing industry bemoans 'big shoes to fill' |

NEW BEDFORD — Leaders of the city's fishing industry praised Barney
Frank's unwavering support for fishermen and his mastery of complex
regulatory issues as word of his planned retirement spread along the
waterfront Monday.
"Barney has been the leader for us in everything," said New Bedford's Rodney Avila, a lifelong fisherman who is also a member of the New England Fishery Management Council. "When he first got the district, he came down and met with fishermen. He said 'I can't give you everything you want but I can make sure you guys get treated fair' and he's been an advocate for us ever since." Read the complete story in The Standard-Times

May 22, 2012 - Listening to the New England Council's Groundfish Advisory Panel talk about how that industry is going to pay for monitoring costs is kind of like trying to figure out how to pay your bills when you've just lost your job. Though monitoring is important keeping costs down is critical. As Panel Member Gary Libby pointed out, "If we had 100 percent monitoring we probably wouldn't have an industry."
