OPINION: Is governor holding up Locke on fisheries relief? |

What’s going on with the “miscommunication” between Gov. Deval Patrick’s office and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke? Patrick wrote to Locke in early November asking for emergency relief for fishing families before the holidays and yet nothing has been done. The allowable catch limits should have been changed then but instead two more months of damage has been done, forcing more families out of the fishing industry.
Standard-Times reporter Steve Urbon reports today that Congressman Barney Frank had said two weeks ago that there is some sort of “miscommunication” between the governor’s office and the Commerce Secretary. May 22, 2012 - Listening to the New England Council's Groundfish Advisory Panel talk about how that industry is going to pay for monitoring costs is kind of like trying to figure out how to pay your bills when you've just lost your job. Though monitoring is important keeping costs down is critical. As Panel Member Gary Libby pointed out, "If we had 100 percent monitoring we probably wouldn't have an industry."
