North Carolina considers limits on commercial fishing |

A North Carolina bill would make red drum, spotted sea trout and striped bass off limits to commercial fishermen in order to preserve them for sport fishermen.
Bill sponsors say those fish are more valuable to recreational fishermen and that making them game fish would attract tourism, create jobs and generate revenue for the state. Commercial fishermen say taking the fish away from them would cost the state money, destroy jobs and limit choices for consumers, The Lincoln Tribune newspaper reported. May 22, 2012 - Listening to the New England Council's Groundfish Advisory Panel talk about how that industry is going to pay for monitoring costs is kind of like trying to figure out how to pay your bills when you've just lost your job. Though monitoring is important keeping costs down is critical. As Panel Member Gary Libby pointed out, "If we had 100 percent monitoring we probably wouldn't have an industry."
