Gloucester Mayor Kirk: Visits should bring fishing relief |

As the U.S. Commerce Department's economic disaster recovery team departed Gloucester after a two-day fact finding tour, the congressional delegation and Mayor Carolyn Kirk Thursday expressed hope for tangible relief and policy changes to remove the causes of the distress.
"My greatest expectation," said the mayor, "is that this process that they have been using across the country in targeted areas can be the beginning of sweeping change for the federal government to rid itself of the disconnect between Washington, D.C. and local communities." May 22, 2012 - Listening to the New England Council's Groundfish Advisory Panel talk about how that industry is going to pay for monitoring costs is kind of like trying to figure out how to pay your bills when you've just lost your job. Though monitoring is important keeping costs down is critical. As Panel Member Gary Libby pointed out, "If we had 100 percent monitoring we probably wouldn't have an industry."
