Voluntary Vessel Speed Restriction in Place in Vicinity of Jordan Basin

NOAA Fisheries Service announces that a voluntary vessel speed restriction zone (Dynamic Management Area - DMA) has been established in the vicinity of Jordan Basin to protect an aggregation of 15 right whales sighted in this area on January 9, 2012. This DMA is in effect immediately through January 24, 2012.  Mariners are requested to route around this area or transit through it at 10 knots or less.

May 22, 2012 - Listening to the New England Council's Groundfish Advisory Panel talk about how that industry is going to pay for monitoring costs is kind of like trying to figure out how to pay your bills when you've just lost your job. Though monitoring is important keeping costs down is critical. As Panel Member Gary Libby pointed out, "If we had 100 percent monitoring we probably wouldn't have an industry."
