Fishing industry leaders' donation will provide hundreds of turkeys to needy

NEW BEDFORD, MA - A donation by three leaders in the local fishing industry has given a big boost to food pantries trying to answer the growing need for assistance this holiday season.

Last Wednesday, the three men — Richie Canastra of the Whaling City Seafood Auction, Carlos Rafael of Carlos Seafoods and Richard Barry of Pier Fish — met to talk about the struggles of local families and decided to do something about it.

Two days later, said Canastra, their combined donation of $10,000 had purchased and delivered 630 turkeys to Pier Fish's freezers, ready for distribution to local food pantries through the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

The various food pantries, such as St. Lawrence, the Red Cross and St. Anthony's, are all linked in a cooperative network that ensures that food aid is evenly distributed and that families are limited to one Thanksgiving turkey apiece.

HASTINGS: Time to improve the Endangered Species Act

However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
