It is estimated that Americans consume more than 5 billion pounds of seafood each year. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that about 84% of American seafood is imported but only a small percentage is examined by the Food and Drug Administration. In fact, a recent Government Accounting Office report found that the FDA devotes " minimal resources" to detect and prevent seafood fraud.
