FDA to Gorton's: Clearer labeling needed on fillets

As part of a widespread initiative, the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration has issued a warning letter to Gorton's illuminating a
misbranding problem involving the fat content of Gorton's Beer Battered
Crispy Battered Fish Fillets.
The FDA noted in the letter dated Feb. 22 that the
nutritional information announcement on the label bears the phrase "0
grams trans fat, same great taste!" in the principal display panel of
the label. The phrase meets the legal definition of a nutrient claim.
But the packaging failed to disclose in another panel
that the customer should seek full nutritional information about fat,
saturated fat and sodium content. The fish fillets contain 19 grams of
total fat, 4.5 grams of saturated fat and 680 grams of sodium per
serving.
