    Federal regulators compromise on cod crackdown
    PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Federal fish regulators found a middle ground Wednesday that they hoped would avert a complete shutdown of fishing in the Gulf of Maine and keep as many fishermen in business as possible this year.

    Cutbacks sought in regional cod catch
    PORTSMOUTH, N.H. - In a move that could bring increased hardship to an already struggling industry, a regional body that oversees fishing issues from Cape Cod to northern Maine voted yesterday to recommend that the federal government reduce substantially the amount of cod local fishermen can catch.

    Feds declare Atlantic sturgeon endangered species
    The National Marine Fisheries Service is issuing a final determination to list the Gulf of Maine (GOM) Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the New York Bight (NYB) and Chesapeake Bay (CB) DPSs of Atlantic sturgeon as endangered species under the ESA.

    Regulators cut cod quota by 15 percent
    Maine Public Radio reported Feb. 1 that the New England Fisheries Management Council has recommended a 15 percent cut in the quota for cod. The report said that would mean a reduction of between 6,700 and 7,500 metric tons of cod that can be harvested annually.

    Omega-3s tied to lower risk of heart arrhythmia
    (Reuters Health) - In a new study of some 3,000 older adults, those with the highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood were 30 percent less likely to develop an irregular heartbeat over the next 14 years than peers with the lowest blood levels of omega-3s.
