Fishermen divided over whether to appeal catch shares ruling |

NEW BEDFORD — Sharp differences have emerged among commercial fishermen over the wisdom of appealing the verdict in a federal lawsuit that went against the industry. At Mayor Scott Lang's Oceans and Fisheries Council meeting at the whaling museum this week, fishermen publicly aired their views for the first time, sometimes rancorously, with the mayor adamant that the appeal must proceed.
"Catch shares are going to collapse the industry unless it's straightened out," Lang said. "That's the whole point of the suit. If we let them off the hook, two years from now you'll be knocking on my door on Orchard Street saying: 'Can we come in. We've got some major problems with NOAA.'" HASTINGS: Time to improve the Endangered Species Act
May 18, 2012 - When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon, he spoke about the importance of preserving “the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” I believe that goal is as important today as it was back then. However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
