Feds agree to waive fee for Oceana's FOIA request in lawsuit over sea turtle protection |

With a court date looming, federal officials relented on their demand that an environmental group pay $16,000 for access to government research and records related to sea turtle deaths caused by commercial fishing.
Oceana, an international environmental advocacy group, filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Marine Fisheries Service last year, seeking e-mails, correspondence and scientific data produced by the government. On Monday, NOAA lawyers informed Oceana that the fee would be waived, according to the environmental group. Read the complete story from Alabama Live.

May 18, 2012 - When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon, he spoke about the importance of preserving “the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” I believe that goal is as important today as it was back then. However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
