Maine's congressional delegtion is applauding legislation that they say will lead to more equitable catch limits in fishing grounds shared with Canada.

New England fishery managers have been hamstrung in their efforts to negotiate with Canada on catch limits by a provision in U.S. law that requires a stock rebuilding period of 10 years. No such provision exists in Canada. That means that stock rebuilding efforts there can be spread out over a longer period, allowing Canadian fishermen higher catch limits.
