Gary Locke to leave Commerce Secretary Post
President Obama will nominate Commerce Sec'y Gary Locke as the next U.S. ambassador to China, senior administration officials said Monday, continuing a game of musical chairs that has shuffled top administration officials at the start of the second half of Obama's term.
 

His brief leadership of the Commerce Department, with its disparate 12 bureaus, including NOAA, which is responsible for ocean fisheries, will perhaps be remembered best for the successful completion of the 2010 Census. The constitutionally-mandated headcount came in under-budget and with relatively few management concerns, successes Locke's closest aides credited to the secretary holding regular operational meetings in its final months.

A senior administration official said no potential successors for Locke at Commerce were yet being considered; the administration still lacks a nominee to serve as the department's deputy secretary, the source said.

May 18, 2012 - When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon, he spoke about the importance of preserving “the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” I believe that goal is as important today as it was back then. However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
