Eric Schwaab to be promoted, Sam Rauch to lead NOAA Fisheries
WASHINGTON - Eric Schwaab, currently assistant administrator for NOAA Fisheries, the top fisheries position at NOAA, has been selected to become acting assistant secretary of commerce for conservation and management. According to several sources, Mr. Schwaab moves to the new position on January 17.
 

The assistant secretary of commerce for conservation and management is responsible for ocean resource management, coastal management, and protected resources.
 
Dr. Larry Robinson left the position last November.
 
Concurrent with Mr. Schwaab's move, Sam Rauch, who now serves as deputy assistant administrator for regulatory programs at NOAA Fisheries, will replace Mr. Schwaab and become acting assistant administrator.
 
NOAA Fisheries is formally known as the National Marine Fishing Service.
 
The formal announcement is expected later today.

May 18, 2012 - When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon, he spoke about the importance of preserving “the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” I believe that goal is as important today as it was back then. However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
