Senators at Boston field hearing hear NOAA enforcement fines misused |

Boston - June 21, 2011 - (Boston Globe) For more than four decades fishing was Lawrence Yacubian's job, a way to put food on the table, pay bills, and support his family. But after being hit with $430,000 in fines for repeatedly crossing over a federally designated fishing zone, the New Bedford scalloper says he was forced to sell off most of his assets, including his boat, to pay the penalty.
Yesterday morning, Yacubian testified before a US Senate subcommittee hearing at Faneuil Hall, jointly led by senators Scott Brown, the ranking Republican, and Tom Carper, Democrat of Delaware and the chairman. Read the complete story from The Boston Globe.

HASTINGS: Time to improve the Endangered Species Act
May 18, 2012 - When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon, he spoke about the importance of preserving “the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” I believe that goal is as important today as it was back then. However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
