NOAA drags on personnel 'action' over Asset fund |

Despite scathing Inspector General's reports on a decade of federal fisheries law enforcement excesses aimed at building a multi-million dollar fund of fines — and the tapping of that and virtually unrestricted use by lawyers and agents — the agency has initiated no disciplinary action regarding abuses of the fund, a labor union that represents NOAA lawyers told the Times Tuesday.
"There have been no such actions proposed or taken against any non-supervisory attorney in the NOAA Office of General Counsel," Richard Hirn, attorney for the National Weather Service Employees Organization, said in an e-mail. Read the complete story from The Gloucester Daily Times.

HASTINGS: Time to improve the Endangered Species Act
May 18, 2012 - When the Endangered Species Act (ESA) was signed into law in 1973 by President Nixon, he spoke about the importance of preserving “the rich array of animal life with which our country has been blessed.” I believe that goal is as important today as it was back then. However, after nearly 40 years, it’s time to take a fresh, honest look at the law and consider whether there are ways it could be improved to do a better job of protecting and recovering species.
