    EDITORIAL: The big picture on fishing jobs
    On the surface, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown's proposed Fishery Impact Statement Honesty (FISH) Act, filed earlier this month, targets desperately needed changes in the accountability and oversight of the Magnuson-Stevens Act.

    But it was refreshing to hear that, on his visit to Gloucester's Cape Pond Ice and Gloucester Seafood Display Auction last weekend, Brown openly referred to the measure as a "jobs bill."

    OPINION: Crony Capitalism Comes to the Fishing Industry
    Michael Milken evokes thoughts of financial wisdom at a level far beyond that of an unsophisticated fishing industry essayist like me.  So, when one of the sessions at the Milken Institute Global Conference 2009 is titled "Innovative Funding for Sustainable Fisheries and Oceans," I take notice.  The panel for the fisheries session was moderated by Larry Bond, a consultant for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) and the speakers were David Crane, David Festa, Jerry Schubel, and Jason Winship.  Two members from EDF and none from the fishing industry, oh, well.

    Gorton's of Gloucester urges consumption of Non-Gloucester Fish
    Gorton's of Gloucester, the fish processor that's been a fixture on the Gloucester waterfront since 1849 and whose oil-skinned Gloucester fisherman as its corporate symbol reaches back for authenticity, is backing the U.S. Agriculture Department's advice to eat more fish with a recommendation to select shrimp, tilapia, salmon and Alaska pollock.

    Eleven Environmental Groups Praise Secretary Locke for Denying Governor Patrick's Request
    Representatives of eleven environmental groups: Conservation Law Foundation; Environment Massachusetts; Pew Environment Group; Environment America; Conservation Network; Natural Resources Defense Council; Oceana; Ocean Champions; Environmental Entrepreneurs; and Ocean River Institute., have written to the Secretary of Commerce to thank him for his decision to deny Governor Patrick's request to increase quotas for New England groundfish through emergency action.
